Excellent Border Guard Identification.
Have any of you seen this kind of document before ?
I bought it on Ebay as Exc Frontier Guard. Nice photo inside with AK. Could there be a badge issued with it ? Front looks like this ! |

Christer,
What an awesome document. I am VERY jealous! It is a very odd type. Most show an image of the badge on the inside left page. Instead yours has a beautiful photo. Still, it should be easy to determine the type as you have the date - 1960. You should have the first type of Distinguished Border Guard badge, the M1949. However, according to Kutsenko and Rudichenko's "blue book", from 1957, until it was replaced by the type 2 in 1964, it should have "KGB" on the ribbon. I suspect though that most did not and in fact had blank ribbons. Anyway, it is shown in their book as badge 2.3.01 on page 141. I want to point out a few things about this great document. First, the badge is awarded by decree of the military unit and not by a higher body. This is typical for badges as opposed to medals. Second, the military unit number "2198" is a four digit number. All Red Army/Soviet Army unit numbers were five digits. Only NKVD, and later MVD and KGB, units had four digit unit numbers. Third, in the photo he is standing in front of his unit's Regimental Banner. Interestingly, it appears to be the M1940 style of banner. The large star and "Supreme Soviet USSR" on the reverse were replaced with a Hammer and Sickle and "For the Motherland" on the M1942 style of banner. The other side would have the State coat-of-arms or "gerb" (or a large red star on the M1942 style) and the full name of the unit. As showing that side would defeat secrecy, like calling the unit #2198, they had to show the back in the photo. Shawn |

Christer, Shawn,
I was wrong, this document is not for a badge. He was actually awarded with his own photo taken in front of the unit banner. It was given to Mayorov, O. T. on October 20, 1960. I've seen another such document before. Alexei |

You're of course right Alexei. I should have read through the whole text (dumb, dumb, dumb). However, I think that Christer still needs the badge for his collection ;)

Guard Doc
Hi Alexei !
No I dont think I bought from you , this came direct from Lativa, but it was bought on Ebay earlier this year. About the doc , is it about a promotion to higher rank ? or what ? |

Christer,
I have probably seen it on eBay. This picture taking was a commendation for good service. I don't think it alone would entitle him to a promotion. Alexei |
