All in the Family - serial number and buying coincidences...
I do believe I'll start another new "General Talk" thread! This one will be about those serial number and buying coincidences that we sometimes encounter. For me, it sometimes takes the form of buying a few medals from one buyer on one day, only to find that I ended up with adjacent or near-adjacent numbers. It might also be that two pieces bought at the same time had similarities in how plastic covers were sewn on the suspensions or maybe nearly identical wear or patina. Maybe you got them from one dealer over time, and research showed them to match (Desantnik and I once had that happen with two ORS's; if it hadn't been for SND, we never would have known). Sometimes, it's the sneaking feeling that the BM and CSM you got from one dealer might actually be in a group to one person just because they came in one handful and sort of made sense.
I'll start this with a couple recent acquisitions, and add more as I dig through my stuff. Attached are two examples: one is of two CSM's from one dealer on the same day that had consecutive serial numbers. I didn't figure it out until I got home; what a pleasant surprise. ![]() ![]() |

Re: All in the Family - serial number and buying coincidences...
I suppose as with anything the more you expose yourself to coincidence the more frequently it will happen.
Quite randomly and accidentally I have obtained awards with consecutive serial numbers http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...tml#post194460 and http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...tml#post217562. On one occasion I also managed to get two Orders with the same number - http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...tml#post165708. This will be down to an error at the mint. When it comes to reuniting groups, I have reunited items from dozens if not hundreds of groups. Usually deliberately but sometimes even rather randomly. If you purchase large numbers of items from the same area or same "single item" dealer these situations will occur. Outside the area of this forum's subjects I do have examples of an award numbering; 058, 060, 063, 064, 065, 067, 071, 072, 075, 078, 081, 082, 084, 085, 086, 087, 088, 089, 092, 093, 095, 096, 097, 099, 101, 103 and another with numbers; 002, 003, 006, 008, 011, 012, 013, 017, 019, 025, 026, 027, 034 and I'm always on the prowl to complete the gaps!
