William,
By chance, do you know if there have been celebrations in Russia (Moscow) ? By celebrations, I mean informal ones, not officials of course. Maybe in front of the former Lenin Museum ? Ch. |

I am not aware of any big celebrations.
One thing I know: surprisingly current Russian leaders behaved in civilized manner about Brezhnev by avoiding any biased political opinions, just few words to acknowledge Brezhnev's contribution to history... William |

There was - until these last days - in the State Historical Museum of Moscow a big exhibition of photographs taken by Brezhnev personal photographer. This will certainly contribute to restore Brezhnev image...

Now living in the former Evil Empire, it seems to me that Brezhnev's image was deteriorated in the West, but not so much here at all. People consider that period as the last good one, before all went to hell. The one who really badly needs image restoration is Gorbachev, as most people blame him for ultimately bringing the demise of the Proletarian Paradise. Marc |

Marc, I totally agree. Just let this joke do the explaining:
In a restaurant: ― Why the meatballs are of cubic shape? ― Perestroika! (restructuring) ― Why are they undercooked? ― Uskoreniye! (acceleration) ― Why are they bitten? ― Gospriyomka (state approval) ― Why are you telling me all this so brazenly? ― Glasnost! (openness) |
