Kuznetsov, Nikolaj Gerasimovich, Admiral Of The Fleet Of The USSR

Here is the M1945 "Victory Parade" uniform of Admiral of the Fleet Kuznetzov. Its a unique uniform in that he was the only one with the rank on the parade date.

Some of his awards are with the central naval museum, St.Pete. Uknown where the rest are. We were also able to get ( a few years ago) directly from his family a long frock coat he had made in 1944 to celebrate his new marshal-like insignia ( he got the rank of "Admiral of the Fleet of the USSR" in 1943, but only got the marshals like rank in 1944 after complaining a bit that he still had to wear 4 stars).

Here is a shot of the coat in what used to be my collection room.

nice later shot of kuznetsov

Nice pic, but, shouldn´t the flag badge(Member of the sup. Soviet)not go at the side of the HSU medal?

Should usually go on the lapel, but who is going to tell him to move it?

Rank Admiral of the fleet of Soviet Union was established only in 1955.

Kuznetsov N.G. and his first deputy Isakov I.S. were given rank of Admiral of the Fleet on May 31 1944, until then both of them were admirals, since 1940.

It was only three admirals in the Navy: Kuznetsov, Isakov and Galler.

Here is list of all Kuznetsov ranks and faximile of original decree for admiral of the fleet on May 31 1944. It was signed by Stalin, not by Kalinin and it's additional proof that rank was not equal to marshal of SU. All marshal's decrees were signed by Kalinin(always, no exceptions) , decrees for the rest of the military personal were always signed by Stalin.

Military Ranks of Kuznetsov N.G.

5 October 1926 – Commander of Red Fleet (medium commanding personal) (Order N5/6)
1 October 1929 – Senior watchmen’s commander (medium commanding personal)
15 March 1933 - Capitan 2nd rank.(order N 1168)
7 November 1935 - Capitan 1st rank. (PCD order N 3090)
2 February 1938 – Flagman 2nd rank (Decree of Central Executive Committee N 90)
28 April 1939 – Flagman of the fleet 2nd rank (Decree of Central Executive Committee N 442)
4 June 1940 – Admiral (decree of Soviet of People’s commissars)
31 May 1944 – Admiral of the fleet (decree of Soviet of People’s commissars)
10 February 1948 demoted to rank of rear-admiral.(decree of Soviet of Ministers CCCP N 283-114C)
27 January 1951 - vice-admiral (decree SM CCCP N 257)
13 May 1953 restored to the rank of admiral of the fleet ( decree SМ СССР N 1254-504C that canceled decree N 283-114 с, from 10 February 1948.)
3 march 1955 - Admiral of the Fleet of Soviet Union
15 February 1956 demoted to the rank of vice-admiral.
26 July 1988 posthumously restored to the rank - Admiral of the Fleet of Soviet Union.

Both Kuznetsov and Isakov continue to wear 4 stars until Victory Parade on June 24 1945. Shoulder boards with big star were instituted by decree of Supreme Soviet on May 25 1945.

But even though they looks a lot like marshal of soviet union, rank of admiral of the fleet was never equal to the marshal of Soviet Union. Rank admiral of the fleet was canceled in 1955 and new rank Admiral of the fleet of Soviet Union was established with the right to wear marshal’s star. Only then it’s become equal to the marshal of SU.

Positions that were held by Kuznetsov N.G. throughout his career.

On October 11 1926 graduated with honor from Navy military school named after Frunze.
From 1926 through 1929 Served in various positions on the ship “Chervona Ukraina” (Black Sea).
From October 1929 through May 1932 in Naval Academy named after Voroshilov.
From November 1933 through August 1936 commander of the ship “Chervona Ukraina” (Black Sea).
From August 1936 through July 1937 military attaché of soviet embassy in republican’s Spain.
From August 1937 through January 1938 deputy commander of Pacific Fleet.
From January 1938 through March 1939 commander of Pacific Fleet.

From August 1939 through March 1946 People’s Commissar of the Navy.

From March 1946 through 19 February 1947 deputy of minister of Armed Forces.
From February 1947 through November 1947 head of the department of military colleges.
From June 1948 through February 1950 deputy of commander of Armed forces of far east.
From February 1950 through June 1951 commander of the 5th (Pacific) fleet.
From June 1951 through March 1953 minister of the Navy.
From March 1953 through February 1956 first deputy of the Minister of Defense – Chief commander of the Navy.
February 1956 demoted in rank and dishonorly discharged from the Navy.
Died on December 6 1974.

awards

The central naval museum has one of his uniforms on display, with that very Supreme soviet badge; might even be that tunic. They also claim to have some of his awards, though some would call them mistaken.

Also, in the back is the frock coat that came from his family with his new rank boards; it does not conform to regulations, therefore it must be a mirage : )

Amazing that something could actually exist that was not per the regulations! Wow!

Badge is not an award, besides they can put any other badge. Naval museum in St. Petersburg has some of the gifts presented to Kuznetsov in various periods, like pistols with engravings etc. But there are not the awards, just gifts.

Ye, it’s must be.
This is photograph of Kuznetsov, Isakov, Galler and few others that was taken in may 1945 in Kremlin and they both still have 4 stars shoulder boards. If you have or saw photograph of him that was taken prior to May of 1945 and you can show it to us, then it’s would be a real proof. Otherwise I see no problem to put any shoulder boards on the tunic, family or no family.
It’s must be very large family, so many people claimed they have uniforms directly from his family.

Ye, this is truly amazing. I’ve found out from this forum that even Iran now in this game too. Wow.

" Badge is not an award, ....But there are not the awards, just gifts. "

Gee, and I thought you understood the posting about terms. Thanks for yet another correction of language.

As for the Kuznetsov family, I'll take their word over yours.

Kuznetsov's own words...
I was working on the book and reading part of "Kuznetsov Remembers" when I came across this interesting part....

"In May, 1944, it was decided to replace them ( the 4 star shoulderboards) by Marshal's ones, with one big star. And when the question with the regulations was discussed, and it was necessary to determine in the table of ranks the equal correspondance of Admiral of the Fleet, it was written in black and white: 'Marshal of the Soviet Union'."

So, there is Kuzntesov himself saying that his boards were first worn in 1944, not 1945, and that his rank was equal to that of a marshal of the ussr. An interesting couple of points. I guess people who are always convinced they are right, always aren't.
