Looks like this group was sold.

Also, if you check that particular dealer web site - most of top military orders are gone, except for one Khmelnitsky 3rd cl, few Nevsky orders and couple of groups...

This particular dealer was at SoS and after a nice conversation he casually mentioned that alot of his high-end items were sold to Russian collectors. Some were sold via a 3rd party to keep the identity of the collector secret.

Many thanks, Rusty.

In your opinion, is it a private collector or could it be an institutional one ?

IMHO, It's a wealthy person. There are people in Russia that don't put their money in the traditional places. They put it into gold, diamonds, paintings and other such things.

Ushakov Construction Question

Hi all,
I'm working on descriptions of Soviet (WW 2) decorations and I came across two diametrically opposing descriptions. Subject: Order of Ushakov.
One description (by H.T. Dorling) has the star of the 1st class made of gold and the medallion in silver, the other (Soviet Military Awards) has this star made of platinum and the medallion in gold. The same discrepancy holds true for the 2nd class.
The obvious question: which is the right one?????
Thanks in advance
Arnold

Arnold,

Just adding in detail what is said on the Shishkov and Muzalevsky book "Orders and Medals of the USSR 1918-1991" :

1st Class:

Order base:
Platinium: 25,00gr +/- 0,88gr

Disk:
Gold: 6,792gr +/- 0,238gr
Silver: 0,179gr +/- 0,006gr

Bas-relief of Ushakov:
Gold: 1,758gr +/- 0,114gr

2nd Class:

Order Base:
Gold: 25,365gr +/- 0,80gr
Silver: 0,668gr +/- 0,021gr

Bas-relief of Ushakov:
Silver: 0,999gr +/- 0,092gr

The book also gives the "precious Metal content" of the anchor + the screw + the joint-pins for both Classes, but as your question was about the star and the medallion, I hope this helps.

As you see, the info on the database of the Forum and our experts are always right! ;)

Best,

Dolf
