I can somewhat make out "Podp-k Mirkin" or Podpolkovnik Mirkin or Lt. Colonel Mirkin...
Let's wait for the non-flash scan... Eric

Eric,
Do you think it could be "Prepodavatel' STU"? - STU Instructor Lt. Colonel Markin, Evg. Fiodorovitch. Alexei |

thanks for the STU instructor!
Absolutely not common with kyrillic writing, and manners of handwriting and here even etched. The 2 lines of the first letter are deeply stroken down, the upper line is very lightly etched, an accidently scratch? The second letter an u, z or tsch? (german transscription by Duden) No idea whether it makes any sense. A bit ashamed to say I just know CTY has something to do with tanks. German search engines say everything about CTY, but nothing fitting. BTW: When rotating the pic 180 degrees, the serial no. is also changing ;) Dedan |

I think CPTU in Russian is "Srednee Professionalno Tekhnicheskoe Ychlishche".

Alexei, I think you got it!!!
"Преподаватель СТУ Подп-к Миркин Евг. Федорович" or (loosely translated in English) STU Instructor Lt. Colonel Mirkin Evgeny Fedorovich I am guessing that the guy had it inscribed in order to have it returned if ever lost... Also, Ericlida, there is no "P" buddy. So it looks like: СТУ = С... Танковое Училище or STU = S... Tankovoe Uchilische (I am not sure which city perhaps Saratov?) Update *** Yes, it looks like we are referring to the Saratov Tank School http://elosar.narod.ru/HTML/HIS/246.HTM (in Russian) Thanks, Eric aka yolkin

Guys,
I think it's also interesting to mention that as an instructor he wouldn't be entitled to this award. OGPW was awarded only for combat action, and in case of a tanker 2nd class was given for destroying not fewer than three enemy tanks. Alexei |
