I picked up a really cool Naval Guards Ensign. Now how many ships were designated as "Guards Ships"?

Lets see what you all have!

Re: Naval Guards Flags and Units

I do not know much about these kinds of flags, but I have one that is identical save the "glory" ribbon at the base. I never really knew what it was for and if the ribbon is a requirement (as I suspect it must be), then there is no point in posting it here.;)

Hi! What part of Louisiana are you from? I grew up in Crowely/Lafeyette area.

Anyway, the St George ribbon at the base of the flag designates the unit as a "Guards" unit. Same as the Guards badge on a uniform designates the wearer of a Guards unit.

What ships were designated as Guards units?

PM sent.

As for anymore info about the naval flag world, I must defer to people like Doug and the other "cloth" guys.

Re: Naval Guards Flags and Units

From an article on the Soviet Navy in World War II:

Quote:
18 ships and fleet units received the title of the Soviet Guards, and 16 were awarded with the Order of the Red Banner.
Unfortunately it did not provide detailed information on the ships. I would assume, though, that any of the ships within those "fleet units" would have also flown a Guards flag.

Thanks Will.

I need to find one of those naval ORB flags then. Were there naval flags with any other awards?

Re: Naval Guards Flags and Units

The photo posted by Bill on the above left shows a flag that displays both the Order of the Red Banner and the Order of the October Revolution. It is my understanding that the only ship that flew this flag was the cruiser Aurora.
