I did some travelling within Mongolia in March of this year. Took some pictures of the gates and buildings carrying signs of orders that were awarded to some provinces and towns. Below are some illustrations that demonstrate that the culture of attaching importance to awards, a soviet legacy, is still alive in Mongolia.
Particular picture shows gate to Darkhan town located in northern part of the country. The town was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor Valor. The second picture shows the memorial at the gate of Selenge province. The Selenge province is the most decorated province of the country. The efforts and contributions of the province to the development of Mongolia's agricultural sector, especially development of virgin lands since 1960s have been recognized by the government in terms of the Order of Sukhbaatar and two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor Valor. The first Type 3 Order of the Red Banner of Labor Valor (aka Industrial Valor) awarded to this province on January 31, 1942 was replaced in 1946. The replacement order was Type 4, Order of the Red Banner of Labor Valor with a serial number 410. (See page 112, Orders and Medals of the Mongolian People's Republic, 1924-1992.khuujii Urnukh, Ulaanbaatar, 2010.) Provincial Government building proudly carrying the image of the order in Darkhan town. Last edited by CtahhR; 06-06-2012 at 03:34 AM. |

Re: Culture of awards is still alive
The Umnugobi aimag, southernmost province of Mongolia, was awarded the Order of the Polar Star on March 14, 1943 for fulfilling the quota of agricultural products. The photo was taken in the hall of the Governor's Office, which proudly displays the paper reproduction of the Order of the Polar Star.

Re: Culture of awards is still alive
It may be paper, but it is beautiful.
