Another crazy idea of mine - names database
I have been going through my paper items collection and found the thing I tought I got rid of long time ago - spare medal ID's, filled with names, but by no chance belonging to one person.
So, there is a lot of such things around the world. While numbered awards can be sometimes matched with order booklets (with S/N database here for example), the unnambered awards cannot. What I mean is that You can have an order boklet for one guy, while some of his medal booklets are in the other country, others still in the former USSR - and It is unlikely that You will be ever able to find them. My idea is to increase this probability by craeting a sort of a name database. Not neccesarily the way S/N database works, but just in a separate thread in this forum. My idea is: 1.A thread is created 2.Everyone posts just 1 post in this thread where he/she gives the list of the names of recipents or eg. booklet's owners in transscription (some unified rules would be a good idea) and cyrilic writing, with a remark like "medal booklet", "ID" "Photo" or "other documents" 2.The post can be edited later to add latest aquisitions. 3.If anyone is looking for someone in particular, he/she just uses the search device to check wether that person was listed by someone or just scans through the posts. I know that this idea may sound crazy, but it may rely help to rebuild once-broken groups. I would gladly see any opinions. |

Names database
Sure, why not? Members post all kinds of things here that go nowhere. If a little posted information helps to bring one broken group together, it would be worth it. Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

Your use of the passive voice bullet "1.A thread is created" doesn't identify anyone.
It's pretty easy to suggest someone else (like Art?) do something. I agree it's a great ideal, but will you be doing all the work? |

Boy, if I had only won the mega-millions lottery..I'd quit work and put this on my top ten list of things to do :)
Seriously, sounds like a fun idea..I don't think I'd want to allocate forum resources to something of this magnitude though. This almost certainly would require having a website in itself built around it. Art

1.I am no moderator (no, this is not a request for promotion); 2.I know the english transcription, but I still have a tendency to mix up english and polish transcription, so I am possibly not a good person to set any rules here. Quote:
Well, perhaps I have to think of creating a website for this. |
