Re: Very early Medal for Combat Service

That is a nice one, Sergei. It was probably awarded to someone for something real. When research is started up, we'll know.

In case you are interested, you have given me a new datapoint in the serial number range for that type 1.1 award, now low 43, high 1984 (as the type 1.2 picks up at 2146, I think we can guess 2000 of the No. ___ type 1.1. awards).

The absence from Battushig's 1st edition was a simple oversight, and that is too bad. This will be fixed (as will many other things) in the 2nd edition.

Re: Very early Medal for Combat Service

Do we know exactly how long the T1 V1 was issued? I assume the majority were WWII issue?

Cheers, Will

Re: Very early Medal for Combat Service

According to Urnukh (pp. 148-50, 153-54), 2000 medals were ordered in 1940 (the type 1.1 medal, #1-2000). Only in 1946 was this stock exhausted and a new order had to be placed (type 1.2, #2001-8000). In 1954, another 2000 medals were ordered (type 1.3, #8001-10000). These were awarded until about 1969 when the type 2 awards (pinback) were ordered.

The omission of the "No." from some specimens of type 1.1 seems to have been no more than a production error.

Determining the chronology and sequence of award will require getting access to the registers held in the president's office (access has long been promised, but . . .).

To summarize:

Type 1.1 - screwback, number prefaced by “No” - Low = 14/High = 1989

Type 1.2 - screwback; mintmarked screwplate - Low = 2146/High = 7890

Type 1.3 - screwback; smaller unmarked screwplate - Low = 8025/High = 9905

Re: Very early Medal for Combat Service

Wow! I didn't know that we had access to information this detailed. I am going to have to order this book ASAP!

I guess if the T1V1 stock was exhausted by the end of 1946, then they were probably all issued for WWII service. I am glad to hear this because I just acquired one and think it is just grand!

Cheers,
Will

Re: Very early Medal for Combat Service

Nice. Urnukh's book gives a nice summary of these. The observed serial number range of this Type 1.1 (screwback, number prefaced by "No"."-- Battushig #A 37.1) is Low 14/High 1989. This variety was awarded ca. 1941-47. The first order placed (October 1940) was for 2000 specimens, and this probably equates to this type.

At present, research is not normally possible, though in theory at least basic information shouldn't be too hard to obtain, some day.
