A superb image of HSU Guards Lt Col Z. G. Iskhakov wearing Parachute Instructor wings. Iskhakov commanded the 13th Guards Airborne Regiment, 1st Guards Airborne Divison, 53rd Army, 2nd Ukrainian Front.

Well-Traveled Trooper

Gents,

It's not that often that you come across a Red Army trooper with five campaign medals. This jump-qualified Colonel was awarded medals for the Defense of Leningrad, Defense of Moscow, Defense of Stalingrad, Defense of the Caucasus and Defense of the Polar Region. Although jump qualified, he was most likely an aviator in order to have covered so much turf.

Nice set of jump wings too.

Looks like it but I think vets are allowed to wear pretty much anything they will still fit into, even if means putting medals on a service dress.

Re: Very Nice Early Jump Wings

And he wasn't just a "desk jockey" judging from the wound stripes over this Nevsky.

Nice Rack

Gents,

Sergeant Major I. V. Moryenov was a recon scout for a 76mm gun battery. He marched in the June 24, 1945 Victory Parade in Moscow. His rack confirms why he had this honor.

Recon Stud

Gents,

One amazing veteran. Sergeant Major S. I. Matyzhonok was assigned to the Assault Detachment of the 870th Rifle Regiment and then the Recon Detachment of the 863rd Rifle Regiment.

By war's end he had been wounded five times (one heavy/four light) and had conducted 100 patrols behind German lines. He personally captured 25 German prisoners and killed over 100 German soldiers to include SS Colonel von Wentzel.

Three Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of Glory, an Order of the Patriotic War and an Order of the Red Star number among his awards.

Two-Theater Sniper Stud

Gents,

Another oustanding veteran. S. D. Nomokonov was an ethnic Evenk. Serving as a sniper during the Great Patriotic War he had 360 German kills including several German snipers and one German general. When later engaged in the campaign against the Japanese, he added an additional seven kills - 367 total.

What makes his accomplishment even more amazing is that he registered his kills using a standard-issue Mosin rifle WITHOUT a sniper scope.

Why he was never elevated to HSU remains unclear.
