Re: Kim Jong Il has died
Yes, interesting stuff indeed. I read a FANTASTIC (but also horrifying) book on North Korea a few months ago:
Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader: North Korea and the Kim Dynasty - Bradley K. Martin This book is packed with so much detail on what real people went through and how the government worked (largely based on interviews with exiles) that it is almost unbelievable some times. HIGHLY recommended. I've had visiting DPRK on my list for 2-3 years now and each time delayed it (went to other interesting places... Yemen, Syria, Libya, Turkmenistan, etc.) - I may have to pull DPRK forward - things should be very interesting there! |

Re: Kim Jong Il has died
There are many documentary pieces based on "exiled" "North" Koreans. Some really interesting pieces and some rather strange facts pop up. Although the dutch documentation of a KFA tour of the DPRK is probably the most surreal.
I think my favourite documentary would be the BBC co-produced one about the young female dancers which was made in the DPRK with DPRK approval. This being said do NOT expect it to be a white-wash. One egg per month is the ration for a "middle class" Pyong-Yang citizen. The documentary also has a great twist at the end - but I won't spoil it for those of you who have not yet seen it. I'll get back on the name I just can't work it out today..... I wonder how many news and entertainment channels will be making their own documentaries on the Dear Leader now he's died? and whilst they are still making documentaries about Steve Jobs too....

Re: Kim Jong Il has died
There's still one (or more?) US defectors living in North Korea. One of them returned to the US several years ago and wrote an interesting little book.
On youtube there's some interviews with some of them and also of the son of the one defector (from the korean war) which is still alive in North Korea. Seeing the son is very weird: - looks like an american teenager - speaks like a hard core korean communist fanatic Many "ugly" things but at least one can't accuse DPRK of being boring! |

Re: Kim Jong Il has died
The biggest news Corporation here, is already making try-hard biographies that lack everything that a biography needs. They already "think" they know everything about his whole life, and brings Korea War-pictures of Kim Il-Sung and Jong-Il to the first page, so it looks like they've researched. Sad that they in one way destroys the history of Kim Jong-Il's life, just because they want good publicity...
BTW, Joe Dresnok, I believe is the name of the guy you're talking about. |

Re: Kim Jong Il has died
Now back on the topic of DPRK awards.
Very little is known of what awards Kim Jong-Il was awarded. A 60 and 65 Years Of Victory Over Germany by the Russian Federation, but what of DPRK awards? Apparently thrice "Hero Of The Republic" (Each with an Order Of The National Flag 1st Class) and thrice Order of Kim Il-Sung. It would be interesting to see if the Dear Leader's funeral will present him in his full military uniform displaying all his awards or wearing that fairly Maoist uniform he was almost always seen in. If anyone out there has a complete list of awards of Kim Jong-Il I'm sure there would be a great deal of interest.

Re: Kim Jong Il has died
I have seen that page before and it is "vague" at best....
It is strange how it omits many details on when, where and why. It also doesn't mention a single DPRK award....... It certainly is a start though!
