Re: Interesting Mongolian rhombus badge
Real beauties there. It is also good that you have the one that is in question (green background and all) so that we can at least lock it down to military.

Re: Interesting Mongolian rhombus badge
Are these sport-related badges? One has "III" at the base of the symbol and the seller has another in better condition with "II" on it. Neither is given much of a description.

Re: Interesting Mongolian rhombus badge
No, these are Best Pupil badges. They come in three classes. They're shown by Battushig as R36, R37, and R38.
Since you clearly have the Mongolia "bug", you really need to get the Mongolian book. Our friendly NJ dealer has a few copies left in stock, though it will soon prove hard to find as it is very much out of print and only remnant stocks remain. |

Re: Interesting Mongolian rhombus badge
Well, I guess it's time for a copy of the Battushig book. I've seen it in a couple of places, so I'll have to get on that. The language is the main thing keeping me from committing myself to it though.;)

Sample page. In many ways, we have moved beyond this book (which is one reason work is underway on a 2nd edition), but it is still Holy Writ. And if you thought you were "hooked" on Mongolian awards now, wait until you see the book! Last edited by CtahhR; 10-11-2014 at 02:56 AM. |

Having Battushig's book will be a good edition to my reference library, but I have to do my best to stay focused - which is darn difficult with the beauty of most Mongolian work.:) Phillip

Re: Interesting Mongolian rhombus badge
This one just came in. It is similar to the previous green background "ЦЕДС" badge, but has "ЦНДС" and "rays" in the green. I saw others with these rays in the bag o'badges posted earlier in this thread. I don't which came first, this one or the more solid background ones. It appears that the more solid green is older, but I can only base this on looking at both in my hands and judging the degree off craftsmanship that went into each - the "ЦЕДС" seems to have more work in it and the enamel is a little duller than the other one. They both have the same markings on th escrewnut, but the one pictured has a larger screwnut (about twice the size).
Phillip I found another badge that is similar (but blue and for "ПДС") and the seller says it's 1970s-80s. Also, Battushig's book is on the way.
