The Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (Azərbaycan Sovet Sosialist Respublikası) was founded on 28th April 1920 from the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (Azərbaycan Xalq Cümhuriyyəti) and became a part of the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic (Zaqafqaziya Sosialist Federativ Sovet Respublikası) on 12th March 1922. The TSFSR itself became a founding republic of the Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics (Sovet Sosialist Respublikaları İttifaqı) on its creation on 30th December 1922. On 5th December 1936 the TSFSR ceased to exist and the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic became a Soviet Republic in its own right.
Baku (Bakı) was the capital of the Azerbaijan SSR was highly industrialised and developed during the Soviet period as the main source of oil for the Soviet Union. During the Great Patriotic War the oilfields of Baku were the main objectives of the Greater German offensives Case Blue and Operation Edelweiß which failed to take their objectives before being repelled by the Red Army. Although remote Baku was the target of heavy aerial bombing. The Azerbaijan contribution to the war effort was very noticeable, especially their supply of resources.

The Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed the Republic Of Azerbaijan (Azərbaycan Respublikası) on 19th November 1990 and declared independence from the Soviet Union on 30th August 1991. The constitution of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic remained in place until 12th November 1995.
