Fake KGB and "Egg" Badges

In case anyone is even considering buying an NKVD egg from the e-site and you missed my rant in another thread: "Truth in Advertising for the NKVD" (sorry, I don't know how to put a link here yet and I see now it was in the wrong place anyway), please don't bid on anything with the serial number 3029 or any variation of it (029, 302, etc.). They were all made as reproductions and shouldn't go for more than $20. They have bent wires holding the pieces together with holes too big for that type.

The reason I bring it up is that some joker (see above post) beat up one of these, chipped off a piece of the "gold plating" and sold the :censored thing for about $340. He's a UK seller and I guess that's all I'm allowed to say.:thumbsdown

These vermin should not be allowed to breathe the same air the rest of do.:screamingmad But I'm sure you've heard all of this before.

I know nobody here would fall for this kind of thing, but just in case you know anyone who is new to the field and was thinking about buying one...:rolleyes:

First, the ones the seller posted (which are as dark as they were on his site). Note the wires holding the the back plate, the wrong (and faked) factory screw nut and most importantly, the screw post attachment to the back. The #3029 is always in the same general area and done exactly the same every time. Like I said, this was not the first person I've seen doing this.:mad:

However, I will also include pictures here of one of my copies I use for references in displays. It's the same thing, but better pictures. Some come with a slightly "aged" finish (fake patina on medal and the gold H&S), but you can see what he did and read the whole story, including emails we sent each other under the above title.

Thanks! I would call this fake crude, but it could certainly fool a novice colector, or an unsuspecting wife looking for that perfect present for his collector husband.

I can guarantee this badge is not made prior to 1991 - for starters, notice the absence of wear.

This is one of many (usually state security or other sexy themes such as early aviation) badges of recent manufacture, often completely dreamt up by creative forgers that have been appearing on the market within the last 5 years.

The document closely resembles what it should be.

Regarding the badge itself, I have some reservations, mostly when looking at the back. As far as I know, the bottom ribbon on which ВЧК-КГБ is written should be flat, not counter-relief, and the mintmark - strangely looking on your piece - should be on the ribbon itself. For the rest, based on these pictures, it looks rather convincing.
