NEW UNIFORM, PLEASE HELP
Hey, I am new to collecting and I am putting together a soviet major's (artilery) parade uniform from the mid to late '80s. I have the cap, belt, and forest green uniform, but I haven't been able to find any reliable information on what kind of medals, orders, and badges an artilery major would have. In my research I have found that there are numerous academy graduation badges, proficiency badges, and orders that are worn on the right side of the uniform, but I don't know which would be correct on for a major or where exactly I would put them.
I also am unsure of some medals. I have concluded that the 60 and 7o anniversaries of the Red Army medals would fit (assuming a typical Soviet Major has been in the service between 13-17 years like the US military). Also, I assumed the medal for combat merits (grey ribbon with gold outline and a silver medal with a crossed sword and rifle) would fit for a veteran of Afgahistan. Finally, I figured the 10 and 15 year service medals would fit. As for orders, I think the order of the Red Star fits and the Soviet Guards Badge. Please let me know if there are some assumptions I am making that are wrong or if there are some awards/proficiency badges that I should have as an artilery major. Please specify what awards are basically the bare essentials that every major would have and then specify what are some of the higher ones and finally the ones that a major would have if my character was on his way to be a marshal. I have not been able to find any good or comprehensive sources on this and I would really appreciate it if I could get some good info on what is worn, where to wear it and what it looks like. thank you so much for your help everyone, -90cent |

Re: NEW UNIFORM, PLEASE HELP
So, do you have a uniform with holes and what not in it, and want to know what goes in the holes, or are you looking to come up with everything?
Pics help too :) |

Re: NEW UNIFORM, PLEASE HELP
Hello and welcome to the forum!
A very good reference are Tretov´s uniforms, since he mentions the career and uniform period and thus you could get a good idea. I sent you a PM with his website address.

Re: NEW UNIFORM, PLEASE HELP
Attached is a pic of two officers. The one on the left has a quite nice amount of awards, I think his rank is lieutenant-colonel or colonel; the fellow to the right is a major and has a little fewer awards. Just to give some ideas.
Left guy: 20 years of Victory Veteran of Labor 60 years of Soviet armed forces 70 years of Soviet armed forces Veteran of armed forces 20-15-10 years of service Right guy: 60 years of armed forces 70 years of armed forces 10 years of service The photo is from some cavalry happening, and it was posted by someone else here at the forum earlier. |

Re: NEW UNIFORM, PLEASE HELP
this is a uniform in good condition as it has no holes, or pin marks. It is almost exactly like the guy on the left in the picture above, but it has black colar tabs for artilery. I am trying to "decorate" it with the propper medals, badges and orders of a veteran of Afgahnistan and a Soviet officer.
Primarily, I am concerned with getting the propper graduation badges (from university, mil academies, etc), proficiency badges and designator badges since medals are a little easier to research. I know officers were allowed to wear up to 3 grad badges on their uniform, but finding the right combo is the problem as there are numerous badges out there. There are also many proficency badges out there I want to make sure I get the right one (and the right grade) for my rank. thanks 90cent |

Re: NEW UNIFORM, PLEASE HELP
Tretov can confirm my suggestions, but on the right side you cou do a plain blue diamond academy badge along with almost any q-badge (sort of looks like wings with a number in a shield in the middle, with tanks and stuff on it), and then on the left, the jubilee medals you noted and maybe a combat service or for valor medal.
