With apologies and a very belated response I thank all and Kim for the information provided. I went to the link and by using the English translation I now have the following information which is still foggy:

Гармаев Гармажап Аюрович - the machine gunner of 257-th shooting a shelf (7 I a shooting division, 7-th army, Northwest front), the private soldier.

Was born on June, 5th, 1916 in village Top Торей nowadays area Dzhidinskogo of Buryatiya in family of the peasant. The Buryat. Member ВКП () since 1941. Formation initial. Worked in collective farm. In Red Armies it is called in 1937. Participated in a campaign of the Soviet armies to the Western Ukraine 1939. Participant Sovetsko-finljadskoj of war 1939-1940

In the winter of 1940 during the советско-finnish war, having appeared in an environment, conducted neat machine-gun fire. Caused to a loss to the opponent, it was pulled out from an environment. Has born the critically wounded patient of the commander. In January, 1940 скрытно has stolen up to the enemy instrument, has destroyed calculation, having opened fire from the instrument, has supported approach of a rifle battalion.

The rank of the Hero of Soviet Union with delivery of an award of Lenin and a medal " the Gold Star " № 220 Гармажапу Аюровичу Гармаеву is appropriated on April, 11th, 1940.

In 1940 it is demobilized. Worked as instructor Dzhidinskogo of a district committee of a party. In 1942 has ended officer rates and has been appointed in Кяхтинский boundary group. Since April, 1944 served on the western border in 86-th boundary group (Brest) on a post of the assistant to the chief of a staff of 3-rd погранкомендатуры (Brest Краснознаменный boundary group to them. F.E.Dzerzhinskogo). Has died on July, 16th, 1945. It is buried in the city of Brest.

Награжден Lenin's award, medals. By a name of the Hero it is named frontier posts in Transbaikalia and in Brest. In the same place monuments to the hero are established.

I am able to understand that he was a machine gunner and that during two different actions he exhibited great courage. I think the 1st relates to rescuing someone and on the second occasion he attacked a unit?? Was awarded Order of Lenin and Gold Star.

Would one possibly mind taking a stab at making it a little clearer, English translation?

Most cigaret cases from that time wre made either from silver (there would be assay marks) or from silver plated melchior. It seems to me that yours is of the second type.

Price and value is really difficult to tell. Melchior type cigarette cases of 1930~40's vintage tend to start at about $10 for plain uninteresting ones; Yours has a premium given the HSU connection, but what that premium is is really up to whoever would be interested by this item.

I just love it! I am not so sure it's a real trench-art, more likely a cheap commercial production, lovingly customized by the owner's girlfriend.
