Kirchgoens,

I agree about the patina - lack of it is not evidence of a fake. On the other hand, I have seen genuine awards with fake patina.

I was interested by the detail of the leaves on the lower obverse and the strong pebbling on both sides. I had not seen that before and it reminded me of what someone described as "hyperdetail" on a fake Order of Friendship of Peoples that I got a few years back.
I went through this current thread looking for something similar on a Budapest and couldn't find one. But in the archive I *did* find one. I believe this is the link http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...html#post41765 to that specific post (I think it was "yeti" that inquired about his Budapest). About 5 or so posts later he gets a :thumbsup so this might be the case for you as well. At least I hope so. I'm not any kind of expert on detecting fakes but if yours is good it's a really strong striking. Something to hold on to as a good example.
Let's see what the experts think.

I think it´s a variation of the Budapest medal with a lot of details.

Looks okay to me.

More I look at it, more I am convinced it is a fake. Even the metal itself seems different from the one used for this medal. It looks the artificially aged brass used for those small false-vintage statue to put on the fireplace...

Andreas, you put your post just while I was writing mine! I am glad to receive you optimistic opinion about this medal. It is the first Budapest I see closely, then I have to admit I can only compare it with pictures. Reference pictures I used show shiny and, frankly, less detailed medals.

Because of the rear, I would say this medal is a (original/non original) V1. Am I correct?

I don't like your medal at all. The details are all off: sickle, leaves, background pebbling, mushy rims, shaky letters, etc.

Yeah. They are definitely suspicious. But as far as I could see, not at all uncommon for the Budapest on certain auctions. We might be flooded with such medals, I fear.

The fact that this "variation" becomes suddenly available in quantities is definitely a worry. All the originals I saw and/or handled were markedly different, and I do not believe this one is one of "the good ones".
Now, this is merely my opinion, and as such, anyone is free to believe in whatever they want, even that the Big Guy in Red will soon show up in your living-room with a bagful of Soviet OMDs :D
