A thread on proper visor cap storage

Gentlemen, please share your tips and customs on how to properly store a decent collection of visor caps. My collection has outgrown the closet, they are currently in a mess and I feel bad when I see them resting in piles upon each other. They should not (according to the visor cap site we all know) not be resting on the visors, preferrably not be stored upside down, probably not be stored in piles on each other - but how to get 30+ caps to fit into a space that has shelf area for only one third of the amount of caps? Any clever ideas?

Re: A thread on proper visor cap storage

I have been reflecting on this topic myself. :thumbsup
I came to the conclusion that I needed some kind of support for the caps which didn't have to rely on the visor and even on the cap itself and that had to be little (approx. of the same size of the cap). Also I didn't want it to be of any dangerous material to the cap.

I hence built some wood support (handmade, but fun to do) to support them around the diameter of the cap. The part that touches the cap is foam (light) but covered with harmless fabric. Here is an example, of course the more the central stick is short, the fewer the space the cap will occupy!

Hope this helps!! :thumbsup

Re: A thread on proper visor cap storage

That is clever - but you can only put them in one vertical layer unless you have some kind of shelves. I am not allowed to put the visor caps in the apartment; if I had that permission I would put a three metre long shelf on one wall and have them all on a display, but *someone* thinks this apartment should not look more like an Soviet army depot or war museum than it already does.

I read somewhere as well that plastic bowls, tupperware-like, onto which the cap is put, is an option as well.

Re: A thread on proper visor cap storage

This is a problem I've been thinking about since the beginning. At this point, I have a bunch of sponges (that are for washing you car) that fit nicely inside a cap. You tilt the cap back a bit and keep the visor off the shelf. I don't know if the sponges are "dangerous" to the hats or not (some other forums have TONS of discussion of how compound x gives off toxic gasses, etc) but none have burst into flames as of yet :D

Making space for a ton of caps is the second issue. I haven't thought of anything other than just having a lot of shelves

Here is a way to store them, it is good for the cap and the bowl is not even made from any toxic plastics. The problem is that we only have one such bowl and it is needed for bakery.

I'm fuzzy on what is "toxic" exactly. Are we talking about harmful effects that will be seen in 100 years? Or are we talking much sooner?

Re: A thread on proper visor cap storage

Probably nor proper, but this is how I do it:
Take two caps, and face the insides of the caps towards each other. Now the visor will get in the way, so turn one 180 degrees. Hold them together, and you can fit a lot of caps into a small area. Rest the cap on the edge of the crown. (Not suitable for display) Through this method, I fit almost 20 caps in a 3 foot wide closet with tons of tunics, and with some room to spare.

This is exactly what I thought when I read this tip the first time! Unless we also own a restaurant it is not very practical! :thumbsup

I always tend to build what I need, in your case I would just build lot of sub-shelves within the shelves you are *allowed* ;) to use! At that point every non destructive method to hold the cap is ok I guess!

As far as harming the caps, I would just say that we always must know when we use plastic that if it's cheap, then it is very reactive and hence you never know what can happen (especially if we are talking expensive caps!)

Re: A thread on proper visor cap storage

Hi folks,

i have a shoe reck witch is like an meter wide and one and a half high.
it can fit 18 cap's on display.
the visor is not used as suport because this kinda shoe rack has 2 pipes as a kinda shelf , witch are tilted so shoe's will stay nicely on.
this has as an advantage that the cockade is not at an angle.

kind regards

Re: A thread on proper visor cap storage

Hello everyone...Since I have a very small collection of hats, I display them inside 2 enclosed book cases that have glass doors. The best way to take care of cloth headgear is not to wear them if possible. While I have been known to wear a hat and/or uniform to a Halloween gathering from time to time, I try to avoid wearing headgear as much as possible. Thank you for the thread.
