Funny (?) doc from Poland
Poland has always had some legal absurds, but this doc shows a realy special situation. I am not even sure if this should be considered funny, but is somewhat absurd.
As an introduction - during the WW2, the Polish government in exile established a new type of award - Cross of Merit wit Swords (in all 3 classes) as a strictly military award (before the war Cross of Merit was both military and civilian award). It was only awarded by the Government in exile and institutions of it's delegature in the Nazi-occupied Poland. The award was never accepted by the PRP as a part of the awarding system (pre-war clasification and criteria was accepted and then modified). Anyway, this doc here is a 1971-dated verification request for a Silver Cross of Merit with Swords to a former AK corporal (who in 1944 joined the 1st infantry Division and reached Berlin in it's ranks). The thing is, that the official state institution has asked a former AK officer (who has spent 5 years in prison for his wartime activity) to certify that a soldier actually received an award for "Burza" (Storm) Action - an action that was aimed against the Nazis, but politically against the Soviets! After receiving that confirmation, a state veteran association actually accepted the soldier's right to wear an award that theoretically noone in Poland was allowed to wear! Apart from being a nice example of Polish Schisophrenia, this doc is one of those papers I am especially proud of. It's because of the AK commander confirmed the awarding - major Zygmunt Maciejowski "Wolski". If You can find a flawless character in the WW2 - he would be. It's not only for his wartime activity, but also for his attiude after the war (which didn't changed even after undeserved repressions in the stalinist era). A great contratry to the "heroes" currently celebreted by the Polish officials nowadays. |
