The medal was instituted on December, 13, 1950 originally in two Classes. The first Class was awarded for the birth and education of four, and the second - three children. These are pictured in the above two posts.
In 1966 the design of medal was changed and was awarded in one Class only for the birth and education of three children. The medal was minted at the Bulgarian State mint. Here is the Type 2 Medal. ( pic CO YY)

Re: Medal "For Motherhood" 1st Class.
A documented single-class ribboned award from 1975.
Questions: 1- Her name? 2- Chronology of the types of this medal? (Two classes ribboned, single class ribboned, single class suspension; change in coat of arms?) |

Re: Medal "For Motherhood" 1st Class.
At the time (1975) this was the lowest award for maternity. The award document will have been issued with a book of "coupons" for subsidised transport etc.. No doubt used by the mother whilst ferrying her children around.

Re: Medal "For Motherhood" 1st Class.
A comprehensive study of Bulgarian awards is in the works....
As for "Quasi-Royal" you must remember that Bulgarians are the "Imperial Communists" and whilst under Stalin's yoke had a Tsar, Tsar Simeon II, The last Tsar who is still to date alive and who not only never abdicated was elected a Prime Minister of the Republic Of Bulgaria. The Principality, Tsarist and People's Republic eras of Bulgaria are all open influences on their modern awards... Although the main focus is upon the Tsarist period, during which they were under the greatest German influence. Bulgaria has by FAR the most complicated and under appreciated modern European history. A Russian sponsored Knjaz, German sponsored Tsars, A Soviet sponsored then exiled Tsar. Georgi Dimitrov too..... not forgetting almost becoming a SSR under Zhivkov and Brezhnev.... I may have a few Bulgarian awards knocking around somewhere....
