Re: Old Stalingrad medal.

Yes, I suppose those stripes were added with pencil or pen ink, or something similar. Why? I have no idea.
But man, what a beautiful medal!! With all that wear and dirt and ugliness...I have no doubt this medal is 100% original to the time period. I'd be proud to have that in my collection!
Mucho fuc%ing bueno amigo. :)

Re: Old Stalingrad medal.

That´s a superb medal! Está genial, felicitaciones!:thumbsup

It seems the veteran remarked the red stripe after losing its color. It was very important to lots of them to preserve their medals.

Re: Defense of Stalingrad medal certificate

This is another Stalingrad award I have just got. It is extremely fragile and it has been reinforced by gluing a second sheet of paper on the rear, to avoid the various pieces to go apart. All data normally filled in by hand are typewritten. I understand it belonged to a Sargent of the Guards. How do you like it?

cheers
sergio

Re: Defense of Stalingrad medal certificate

This is the first I've seen of a typed one. The document itself seems authentic, but one would think that the bad typewriter would not have been used (especially where the "3" is typed through the line behind "194_"). Is there a "Doc" in the house? ;)

Re: Defense of Stalingrad medal certificate

Sergio, can I see the reverse just so I can compare repairs?

Re: Defense of Stalingrad medal certificate

I think it looks good.

The guy that signed the document is the commander of the 6th Guards Cavalry Division (on the stamp it is written as "Guards and Cavalry Division"), Guards Colonel Brikel. He became a Major General in 1944 and Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945.

Re: Defense of Stalingrad medal certificate

So guys, I take it that typed documents of this nature were not as uncommon as I assumed? I guess I just liked the calligraphy with the flourish of style on many "defense of" documents enough not to even consider a typed version. My thinking "inside the box" mistake.:o

Yes, on field-awarded docs typing is less frequently encountered, especially the lower the organization.

This is probably due to:

1. Most drafted clerks didn't know how to type (a relatively rare skill before the computer).

2. the pain-in-the-ass factor of having to lug a delicate ten-pound item hundreds of kilometers under combat conditions.

Re: Defense of Stalingrad medal certificate

Makes perfect sense to me. And then try to imagine a clerk getting killed and the letter to his family reading: "It is with profound grief that we must report that Private Boris Badinov was killed in action 10 Agust 1944 as he heroically attempted to overcome an enemy soldier who was cowardly retreating while carrying Pvt. Badinov's typewriter. Fortunately, the cannon round which killed the valiant Pvt. Badinov and the enemy soldier did not permanently damage the typewriter which was quickly repatriated, repaired and returned to active service."
