Red or White?

Are these boys Red or White? (I have my guess, but I'd like to hear from the experts.) Close-up on one guy and his kitty who, we must hope, wasn't destined for the cooking pot.

The oval insignia on kitty man and his neighbor's head gear looks White to me.

That was my thought as well. Many of the individuals in the group appear to be displaying an oval cockade on their headgear which I am presuming is the Imperial cockade.

What you cannot tell from the photo is that the kitty is Felix Furzhinsky, a Chekist agent.
Kitty survived and was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of the RFSR.

I agree that the oval cockades probably mark these gents as czarist or white army. Also the epaulets on some of there coats; those were removed by red soldiers lest they end up nailed to their shoulders by some Chekist.
As for the cat, cats tend to be politically neutral and are for whoever is supplying the food.
