Re: Major changes to the the Russian Award System

I thought the Badge of Distinction For Impeccable Service was a pinback although I've only ever seen the reverse of an Imperial variation. I don't think I've ever seen anyone pictured wearing one either.

I've only seen them in books and on Wikipedia (yeah, I know:o).

I wonder what the rationale is behind changing all screw backs into suspension awards. What about the size? Are they going to shrink the large orders so that they fit better among the other suspension orders?

Russia's Modernised Orders

Has Medvedev's Sept. 7, 2010 decree regarding improvement of an award system been discussed on the forum? The belated news of order refacing shocked me.

Re: Russia's Modernized Orders

I realize it's a matter of personal taste and sensibilities, but these are really bizarre. The mix of imperial and Soviet themes and design while intending to institute a new award system for the 21st century and beyond is unsettling.

This reminds me of the "new" US Army's "traditional" blue army service uniform. Both it and these "new" Soviet, er, Russian medals are tired anachronisms.

Re: Russia's Modernized Orders

Agreed, though I have to say that these are at least a little better looking than some of the other post-Soviet awards - though no less gaudy.

Personally, I think they should just make the move away from ribbon-based awards and go to a system of just badges sort of like the Mongolian awards (pin rather than screw attached though). But that is just my taste at the moment and I'm sure I'll change my mind later.

Makes you wonder if the new "Order of the Red Star" will even be a star!

I hope they leave that one alone, but it appears nothing is sacred anymore. I'd like to know the rationale being discussed and used to justify these changes/reversions. If they are simply trying to be unique in the world's military awards, they have always been that way IMHO, but it looks like what has already been said about a desire to change the actual self-image of the government/military. But to what end or purpose is unclear at least to me.

Re: Russia's Modernized Orders

Recent history of the Red Star puzzles me. According to the official website of Russia's government, this order had never been a part of post-Soviet award system. Yet, in Moskovskiy Komsomolets article, it was written probably due to the reporter's fancy that the Red Star after its 80 year history had just been retired.

Preservation of patriotic values and eradication of outdated symbols are self-defeating goals. Russia's awards can't be politically correct and concurrently carry on a tradition of Russian/Soviet military. Each symbol (Communist red star, Christian cross, order named after a saint, Imperial crowns on the eagle) can be considered as inappropriate for a modern democratic, multinational, multireligious country. In my opinion, Soviet polkovodets orders weren't outright Communist and there was no need to redesign them

After a little research, I have learned additional details of the decree that hopefully will be interesting to forum members. Deputy Chair of Presidential Heraldry Council Alexander Tsvetkov stated that the Council removed Soviet symbolism from the award system. Five-sided stars were replaced by crosses. Nevsky lost its status of an exclusively military order and was already awarded twice. Anniversary of Victory medals are no longer considered as state awards, though recipients retain benefits. Except for an Order of Courage and Bravery Medal, each award can be bestowed only once and with an interval of at least 5 years. For a heroic deed and with the President's approval, 5 year restriction is waived. Soviet catch-up orders and medals can still be awarded. Sale or Forgery of modern Russian and Soviet awards is punishable by law. :thumbsup Soviet orders are to be worn after Russia's orders but before Russia's medals. Orders and medals can be inherited or donated to state museums only, provided such museums are properly furnished. A space flight is to be recognized by a medal "For Merits In Space Exploration", title Pilot-Cosmonaut and no longer a deed worthy of Hero of Russia title. The only problem I can see of the forgery part is that it is modern awards. Doesn't say anything about Soviet or Imperial awards.
