The Start

I think a good start would be to have a nice clear Pic of a Unit stamp and then for one of our Russian speakers to explain exactly what info the stamp has and where.

Here is one from a related thread in the paper items section ( these threads can be joined later).

This is a very good idea. There is a lot to be learned in this area and I know that I need the info that the forum can provide.

Hmmm.

Eddie, I am not sure what you are wanting to do.

I don't think there is any pint in collecting all unit stamps. There should be in excess of 20,000 of them.

There are other channels for checking to see if a given unit existed at a certain time and place too. The same is true for wording of unit names.

One question that would be interesting though is are there different types of stamps, ink, etc that indicate different dates.

Isn't it "HQ of 9th air army" (ok, "shtab" isn't exactly HQ, but what's the english word for this?)?

Al,

I think that would translate to Staff which in this case would then be as in HQ Staff.

Eddie.

Soviet 4th Army After 1944

Just got a neat grouping in for an officer who served with the 4th Army in the Spring through Fall of 1944. Does anyone know what the Army was doing at that time?

Thanks!

Gerd-

I don't have my references handy, but it looks like you should start investing in the Soviet orders of battle.

Here's a link on George Nafziger's website to the books by Charles Sharp:
