Re: Need help with translation of two documents (Suvorov & Red Star)

2. ZAZIMKO Andrei Vladimirovich

Rank: Major–General of Tank Troops. Commander of the 8th army of the Leningrad front.

Awarded with the Suvorov order 2nd class.

Born=1899. Nationality=Ukrainian.

Wounded in 1941.

Awarded before with: Order of Lenin, Order of the Red Banner, Medal XX years RKKA, Medal for the defense of Leningrad, Order of Kutuzov 2nd class.

I can read/understand almost everything but I would appreciate it if someone could help me with the (full) translation of the two award documents.

Kind regards,

Stefan

Re: Need help with translation of two documents (Suvorov & Red Star)

Three corrections:

Kurapov was chief of the 6th department of the staff of the 31st Tank Corps.

The document is signed by the Corps commander, Major General of Tank Troops Grigoryev. I can't figure out the last word on the document (in blue after 'Order of the Red Star'), but it isn't an signature.

Zazimko was commander of the armored and mechanical troops of the 8th Army.

Auke,

One correction to your corrections:
The last "word" on the document (in blue after 'Order fo the Red Star') IS a signature, and is Novikov's.

Re: Need help with translation of two documents (Suvorov & Red Star)

Are you sure? It's not in the usual format. There is no indication of position, rank, unit and name. Furthermore, a Red Star could have been awarded by a Corps, why the need to go up the chain of command? And finally, the 31st Tank Corps was directly subordinated to the 1st Ukrainian Front, and there was no one with the name 'Novikov' in the front's military counsil.

Re: Need help with translation of two documents (Suvorov & Red Star)

Auke,

Yes, I am sure that it is a signature, and that the name of the person that signed is 'Novikov'. Now I never said that it was THE Novikov necessarily; it happens to be a somewhat common name.

I have tweaked a bit the original picture; you can see that under the signature itself, there is a stamp with the name.

OK, you convinced me :thumbsup I hadn't noticed the stamp. However, I still don't know why this recommendation went up the chain of command and who this Novikov could have been.

I know it's not THE Novikov; he was an airforce general.

Marc/Auke, I believe it´s the signature of NOVIKOV Aleksandrovich Nikolai.

Colonel-General of Tank Troops. Commanding Officer Tank Forces 1st ukr.Front.

Could you guys help me with the rest of the text. For what did they get the orders? Kurapov...summer battles 1943...winter battles 1944. I can´t read/understand the rest so good. :(
Zazimko organized the tank-,artillery- and rifle troops??? :(

Re: Need help with translation of two documents (Suvorov & Red Star)

From the look of it, the Suvorov is sort of a cumulative award for preparedness and efficiency shown on various occasions. I did not expect that, I'd have thought that it would have been for some specific action/operation.

For having fought the entire war

Just got research back for a 479K OPW2 to a Captain. It turned out he had served the entire Civil War and the entire Patriotic War and was wounded twice, but wasn't awarded anything. So when the war was over in May 1945 they decided to give him something anyway for having been there and getting wounded twice.

"During the period that he was with the regiment, he showed himself an fastidious and disciplined officer. He is an active participant in the battles of the Patriotic War and suffered one contusion and a severe wound. The regimental command recommends comrade Zheludov, an active participant of the Patriotic War, for the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class."

Not spectacular but not all awards can be for bravery. A Private didn't get an award for just "having been there", but officers apparently did.

Anyone with a Soviet Military Encyclopedia?

Hi guys,

Any chance someone who owns this book can look up the biography of Breydo, Anatolij Eruhimovich, Artillery commander of 57th and later 39th army for me? (БРЕЙДО Анатолий Ерухимович) I've found out over the weekend that this man is a distant relative (grandmother's cousin) and I'd love to learn more.. I was able to find some bits of info on the web, a photo of his grave even, but not a full bio.

Thanks!

George
