Hello Daax,
This was not done by the mint that's for sure!
Is it a date? I don't know, but the medal was only established in December 1942, so that cannot be the date the awardee received it.

Some medals have been seen with some similar numbers and they were usually the serial number of the award document accompanying the medal. In your case, it doesn't seem a document serial number neither.

My guess (just an idea) would be that this is a date of some sort that was meaningful to the awardee and has been done by the awardee after having received the medal somewhere later.

Hi matteti

Well, it doesn't look like a serial number because of the space between the 4 and the 5 and the number 42 so I guess your're right about that it's a date.

Looking at the information about the Sevastopol medal it says that the defence of Sevestapol lasted between 5 November '41 and 4 July '42 so it could be referring to the two dates.
But then again, the number 41 is not marked on the medal so in that case that would be wrong.

Well, I guess it's an open question.

Sevastopol medal

Question about the Sewastopol medal:

Which variations of the Sewastopol medal exist? Expecially which medals have on the reverse a longer hammer and sickle handle with dot above the blade / or without dot?

1 variation - medal without convex rim , ribbon of sailor caps are opened and have some distance to the neck
- with dot
- without dot

2a variation - medal with convex rim, ribbon of the sailor cap are opened and have some distance to the neck
- without dot

2b variation - medal with convex rim, ribbon of the sailor cap are closed and near the neck
- without dot

3 variation - "voenkomat" medals (different ring versions)
- only without dot

4 variation - 1993 version of the medal without gold plating
- only without dot

thanks in advance and best regards
Andreas

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Sevastopol".

Here is a very well worn Sevastopol.
The stories it could tell....
Looks like it's "been through the wars".

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Sevastopol".

I like these medals,

They're like a "working mans Partisan Medal" in appearance i think :).

I have seen one for sale currently that looks like it's just come out of the mint.

San'kov was an old (in his 40's!) Black Devil of the 2nd Perekop Regiment and was wounded during the Heroic Defence.

The abbreviation "ЧФЭ" stands for "Черноморский флотский экипаж", something along the lines of "Black Sea Fleet Personnel Administration".
