Badge "Excellent People's Education".

I'm pretty well aware by now that this has just become a thread for me to display excellence in education badges, but everybody knows that doesn't stop me.:)

Here's a gorgeous Georgian SSR People's (Public) Education badge - no document yet - and then an enigma.

First, the normal one - I believe is is a Type 2 with an excellently well preserved enamel star on top and some very nice gold lettering on/in the enamel on the book face. At least I think it's enamel (see next badge); it could be paint, but I doubt it from the Moscow Mint and from that time period (post-war through 1950s).

I've also seen these both numbered and unnumbered (as in this case), but I don't have any documents to know what the normal procedure was. Since I've only seen one numbered, I'm inclined to think it was unusual or that one was done to make it more "valuable."

Phillip,

As a rule of thumb, earlier badges tended to be numbered. As the awarding policy changed (eg, they started to distribute them much more liberally than at the beginning), most badges stopped being numbered.

re: Education-related Badges and Documents

Yeah, I know what you mean. In general, the numbered badges of this type that I have seen have all been 3 digits, no more.

Now, here's an odd variation of the above type 2 of the Georgian badge above. Type 3 was a round medallion suspended on a small pin-back suspension. But this is very odd. It can't be a post-communist badge, but it is missing the star on the top. The H&S are badly formed and almost not there at all. So, it isn't a blank even though the badge at this stage is nickle or chrome plated and there is no text on the open book. The screw is also considerably wider than the complete badge.

So, what is then? Enigma.:weird

Phillip

One more thing: in natural light, the badge looks shiny and silver without any discoloration that I think was reflections in the photos.

Phillip,

It looks like it was struck from a very worn die.

Re: Education-related Badges and Documents

Phillip, your Armenian badge should have black and white enamel.

I think it's damaged.

Re: Education-related Badges and Documents

I have written to the seller and an awaiting a response, but I did notice something that makes me scratch my head. The depiction of the mountain (Ararat) is very different in the two badges. If you look at the two peaks, you'll see two different shapes and on mine there is no "indentation" or area that is depressed to hold enamel.

My other thought is that this might be a "miniature" version of the one in the photo on the other thread. It is only about 30x20mm (very small compared to most other excellence in education badges). It is either a variation or a fake. Either way, I want to find out. So, do you have any idea what the measurements are of the one with the enamel?

Phillip

Update: The seller responded and pointed me to Avers No.8 which says there are at least two distinct types of the Armenian SSR People's Ed badge - one with one or two colors of enamel (like the photo in the other thread) and another type without enamel and made from two pieces - the book and leaves are a separate piece like mine).

I thought about this when I noticed the difference in mountain tops and recalled that there are at least three different variations of the Ukrainian SSR Public Ed T2 badges with some having blue and gold, other black and white and still others with blue and white enamels. I know this because I've managed to find all three and a fourth variation with a different version of the reverse made in L'vov. And only two of these variations are in Avers.

I guess the point is, we (myself included) shouldn't jump to conclusions about any of the awards, especially badges, made in the republics rather than one of the "narkomats" or main mints.:)

P.
