Wow! I'm impressed. I suspect they either don't really have over 12 millions records available or there is some problem in the search engine making many records not available through search engine.

Unfortunately, I am not a Russian speaker neither. However, I am constantly learning and improving and use many tools to help me. I find there is so much wealth of information in the Russian internet that it would be a shame to not use it. As for podvignaroda, I like to look at my soldiers' subordinates or superiors award citations, or to read citations for other members of the same small unit. This can help better understanding the fighting that unit went through during that time and consequently, it helps learning more about the individual soldier that we research. Also, you can use the site to research Military IDs or other IDs.

As for obd-memorial, I also got hits for MIA and KIA, soldiers that were sent to jail (Gulag), and a few others that I am still trying to figure what the document was for.

I didn't really make any official calculation, but now I think I am closer to 2/3 than 3/4 of hits. However, I don't have very many groups and many of them where already researched by traditional mean. So far, I didn't get any new hit on podvignaroda for an award that was attempted to be researched at Podolsk but came without result.

Also, for now we can't expect to find any long service awards in post 1945 or GPW catch-up awarding.

I have always wanted to find unit's awarding citations. I have few groups that earned Suvorov or Red Banner orders for which I would like to obtain the citation. Are those posted on podvignaroda and how can we search for them?

I know for the Honorific city titles given to unit, those are available through the Supreme Commander Decrees and where published in newspapers of the time as well. But what about orders awarded to units?

Re: When will it stop?

You could go to Google Translate and set phonetic signs, and just write the name with regular letters, and it'll pop up in Cyrillic.
And if you need to write it in Cyrillic, find the Cyrillic alphabet on Wikipedia, and just copy/paste the letters in.

A sometimes long process, but it works neatly.

Re: When will it stop?

Orders to units were awarded by Presidium decree (ukaz) as well. It could be that the recommendations were written up at army level and then went up the chain of command, but somehow I doubt it.

Re: When will it stop?

Speaking about the content on podvignaroda, anybody was successful at exporting the big military maps they have there?

They are in flash content (same as citations), but because they are so big, they are not readable when printed in PDF files. I tried many things to get them on a file II could save to my PC but everything failed so far.

Would appreciate get any hints from techies here. I am sure there is a way to do this.

Thanks in advance!

Re: When will it stop?

I use HTTPAnalyzer. You need to play a bit with it, but I can retrieve their original .jpg files.

For some reason they won't load today (I tried two different computers), but I'm using PDF 24 (en.pdf24.org), which allows you to choose the format (PDF, JPG, etc.) and the resolution (150 DPI or whatever you want), so if you choose JPG with a high resolution the maps should be readable.

For all of you, map freaks, here are a couple of interesting resources:
. RKKA
. Velikaya Otechestvennaya Voyna

So once I've gotten the man's name right, I enter it (all three names(of the one man)) and get a very large list of that same name: Бондарев иван михайлович
?1 Are there really 6+ pages of Бондарев иван михайлович in this archive?
?2 And are they all different men?

I can make out the DoB and the award (singular)
?3 When I click on the award he has I only see that one item; what button do I click to find a list of all his awards with hopefully serial numbers? I can't seem to find it.

?4 Once I have the name can I search by award? In other words can I search for just BMs(or whatever) within the 'Ivan Smith' results?

Re: Podvignaroda question

A 1 Oh yes!
A 2 Not each entry is a different person but there are lots of different people.
A 3 They don't do serial numbers, To find more awards by a certain person (if any) you have to trawl through (nearly) all of the results
A 4 No.

Surely in one of the myriad documents that you get when you click on one of the lower left buttons (after clicking on a specific man's name) there will be an serial number somewheres? Maybe a copy of the temp. cert.?

Where do I do the latter part?
