Stalingrad

Guy, just finished the book "Stalingrad" by Antony Beevor (also authored "The fall of Berlin 1945").

Must say that this book really paints a clear picture of the suffering of both the Germans and Russians during this pivotal battle.

I would recommend it as required reading to understand why the medal for the "Defense of Stalingrad" along with the legit paperwork is a must have for any serious collector.

Beevor clearly did his homework when researching the material for this book. At 433 pages (excluding statistical info) it will keep you going for several days.

Now on to "Stalin - The first in-depth biography based on explosive new documents from Russia's secret archive" by Edvard Radzinksy, the author of "The Last Tsar".

I like reading Beevor a great deal. I feel he's well versed in his material.
His book about the battle of Berlin was quite good.

I read his Stalingrad book twice, both times I was in Stalingrad for a bit. Amazing to be reading it in a hotel next door to where Paulus surrendered.

The Berlin book is very well done, a great follow up! However, I tried reading his book on the Spanish Civil War and gave up on it. Dull.

Hi to You all guys! I'm a new member from Italy (I joined the forum sometimes ago but never posted yet so..this is my first).
I'm finishing a really well done book by Catherine Merridale: "I soldati di Stalin"(if there's any other Italian here...) original title: "Ivan's war.The Red Army 1939-45".I think it was first published in England in 2005,in Italy only on April 2007. I suggest it, even if You certainly know it yet!Another, for me, very good work that depicts a general image of the Soviet war against nazi invaders is Richard Overy's "Russia's War" ("Russia in Guerra 1941-45").
Beevor's "Berlin" was a real exciting experience for me.
"Stalingrad" is on my writing-desk...just in front of me I have to start it next days (never found the time in the last month), togheteher with "from Stalingrad to Kharkov" by gen.E. Raus (someone knows it???),...and I hope to finish a book on Stalin psicology...I left it as it seemed too boring at a certain point. Well... I wish You a relaxing reading Gentlemen...but I go to sleep now!

Have just finished; "Voices from Stalingrad"

A decent read with a lot of first person material from the participants of the battle. If you liked Beevor's book, you'll like this one. :thumbsup

I'm reading right now "A Writer at War" which is a book made from the notes of Vasily Grossman, a correspondent from the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper. The notes were compiled by Antony Beevor. It's an interesting reading from a first person material. I haven't finished the book yet, but I do recommend it. However if your looking for only a report from the Stalingrad battle, this might not be the book for you because it covers the war from Moscow to Stalingrad and then on to Berlin.

I read that one recently. Not bad, 7 on a 10 scale maybe.

I also read 'Tank Rider' (?) recently. I enjoyed that one as well. That was one from the trenches (or back of a T-34/85 in this case). :)
