Somehow, we have avoided (?) a dedicated thread on this order. Disliking a silent vacuum, I start one.

Kim Il Sung Order / 김정일 훈장, type 2

Serial numbered but someone has worked very hard to obliterate that number and, while it is legible, I won't share that information.

I must admit to being surprised at the size and heft of this order.

A comparison follows, selected at random.

Re: Order of Kim Il Sung

I'll have to photograph mine soon.

That one looks familiar to me. There have been two of these heavily damaged serial numbered Orders sell (or be removed from the market) in the last year. One was $838 (over ten times what it is worth) and I forget what the other one went for.

They are large, heavy and quite robust but the poor quality pin attachment on the back is prone to breaking under the duress of use.

The three I will be presenting will be in the 150-250 number range. I almost purchased a forth also in the 150-250 for $150-250 range recently but decided against it as they continue to find their way onto the market and there just are not that many collectors out there to hold up prices.

I would estimate that there are at least 15-20 of these in the western market sphere and I know one Chinese dealer is sitting on a similar number of them to try and get the highest prices possible.

As I've said before I will post some pictures showing how numerous many DPRK items are. It is on the "to do" list. I'll try and get a pair of the Kim Il-Sung Orders posted tomorrow as the third is currently "on tour".

Re: Order of Kim Il Sung

So you're the one paying US $365.09 as if the price was an amount of sand grains, haha!
Congratulations with the Order of Kim Il Sung (I've now banned you from the DPRK - lol no) !

It's always good to see that some fine items ends up on the Forum.
But as CtahhR says, there's too many OKISs out there, so it lowers the value of the award. It's only gold plated copper, so the only value is the high rank it has.

CtahhR,

A "thumbs up" for posting your duals!

Re: Order of Kim Il Sung

Here is a Type 2 numbered 150-199.

As can be seen the Order is constructed from solid copper with a steel pin.

This particular Order has spent a considerable period "underground" and acid has eaten nearly everything but the copper.

I believe the jeweller may be giving this a complete rejuvenation as all damage that has occurred to it after the dead of its original owner.

The problem that causes the weak pin attachment is due to the main portion of the Order being plated before the "hood" for the pin attachment, which is the re-plated. A fatal production mistake.

If this had been a Soviet produced screwback it would be one of the finest awards in existence.

Founded 20th March 1972.

Re: Order of Kim Il Sung

Here is the second Type 2 numbered 200-249.

The condition of this Order is considerably fresher than the last retaining even the gold plating on the steel attachment pin.

The third Kim Il-Sung Order will be shown in detail later but for now can be seen where it was originally posted elsewhere on the forum.

Re: Order of Kim Il Sung

Anyone have a type 1? I suspect I know that answer.

Have any been known to have come onto the market?

Re: Order of Kim Il Sung

I have known at least 2 come onto the open market. I have very much the feeling that the Chinese collectors usually keep this one for themselves.

As for the reason why the design was changed so early in its life we can only speculate but it certainly looks less like and Order "Lenin" it the 2nd Type.

Re: Order of Kim Il Sung

I am told that there was/is one on display in the "Anti-American War in Korea" gallery at the military museum in Beijing, but that gallery was closed when I was last there. I suspect that the the history needed refurbishment.

Re: Order of Kim Il Sung

I thought about taking pictures of some Type 1s when I travel to the DPRK this year. But I can really say to my colleagues and superiors "Could you take off your Order of Kim Il Sung and put it down on the table, please?", lol.

I should be able to get some more proper pictures of some Orders of Kim Jong Il too.

I've seen some type 1s on the market, but I do not see any reason not to keep them. So they're probably in the backpack of some Chinese collectors.

Most likely a refurbished history. The PRC now openly admits that the DPRK attacked the ROK and not the other way round.

It must be noted that many of these earlier Orders were awarded to Institutes, Facilities and even individual tools. These awards to non-mortal things are less likely to no longer have use of them.

According to the "official" numbers there are now probably just as many Type 2s as Type 1s. The highest observed numbers of Type 1 is about 100 more than the highest Type 2 so far but Type 2s are continuing to be awarded.

Updated;

The Type 2s are no longer awarded so they may in fact be the rarer of the first two types.

Here is another in the 200's range.

The green is from the copper body and notice the gold plated pin.
