Naval Navigator Badge.
Dietrich,
Actually these were copied from Russian Imperial badges. Alexei Quote:

The tsarist era badge with a compass is actually called "Badge, marking the graduation from the Officers Navigator's Class" and came into existence in June of 1913 and was specifically Russian navy, not Russian merchant marine...
The background area behind the sextant actually shows a representation of a compass face. At one time I owned a very well made fake that I thought was genuine until I realized that the background had the points of the compass reversed 9east was marked as west & vice versa) - apparently the illustration that the faker used for reference was printed backwards and he did not know any better! Merchant Marine badges like the one that started this thread were sold to collectors in the metro NYC and Philadelphia areas in the early 90's as sub badges by emigres who may not really have known what it was that they were selling. Come to think of it, it seems to me that at shows in the early nineties any soviet medal or badge whose origins was in doubt was invariably labeled as "KGB" or "Submariner" |

j h beers is dead right. These badges have been flogged as sub badges for several years now. All are in fact merchant marine badges. Some are new 1990s era ones but others are much older - 60s, 70s. It is just that the dealers only started to buy them up in recent years to sell to the West as sub badges.

j h beers,
I am not sure I understand your point - all I said was that the design of this badge (the "submarine" one) was not new and based on a an earlier Russian serie of badges. BTW, strictly speaking the Imperial Navigator badge was issued to those, graduating from the Interim Navigator's Class (Navy) and Gydrographic School of the Nikolaev Marine Academy (both Navy and the Merchant Marine). In total there was half a dozen Imperial badges following a similar design. Alexei |

No specific point - just trying to offer some extra info about the imperial fore-runner of the Soviet era badge and a comment or two on how I remember the soviet badge was represented when it first appeared in the American marketplace...
By the way, thank you for the extra info on the Tsarist badge. I did not know that merchant marine officers could qualify for it, too. (I wish that there was a "Soviet Miltary Awards Page"-style forum for discussing imperial badges and jettons!) |

Hey, I REALLY like the idea of an Imperial Russia forum, along the lines of this one. It is a fairly obscure topic but very interesting to me. I own several decent pieces, maybe 20 in all, and I am in the process of buying a few more here in Tbilisi. Last night I looked at an incredible -- but not for sale -- collection of Tsarist medals and badges, well over 100 of them, at the home of a friend. Maybe I can eventually buy some of his duplicates. I'll only be here a month this time but I expect to return for another year later on this fall. Lots more opportunities for collecting. Good luck and please let me know of any good sites on this subject. How about adding an Imperial Russia sub-forum here?
