Reparing a medal
I have a Defense of the Caucasus Medal with a seperate ring. The ring has detached from the medal. Is there anything I need to know regarding re-soldering the ring?
Thanks, Doc |

Removing gold plating
I have an order of glory 3rd class which has been gold plated to pass as a 2nd class.
Basically I got stung and found out when there was no research to come back! I would like to remove the plating and restore it to its former glory (no pun intended!). Does anyone know how to do this without damaging the order? Thanks Mark |

hi Mark,
Hydrochloric acid removes gold plating but probably everything else too, gold has a low melting point so in therory you could try and melt it off taking care not to use too much heat. It also buffs off but also not a very good option. Mercury removes it as well , not sure what effect that would have though. Regards Eddie

I wonder if the electro-chemical process used to electroplate can be reversed?
I know there is a process I used to remove 'crud' from ancient buried coins that involved electricity. Maybe something similar? In any event it's a question for someone a lot smarter than I.

Electrically strip plating
Hi Eric,
I was thinking along those lines too until i read this, I quote: "In theory, it seems it should be possible to electrically strip the plating off of an object by the opposite process by which the metal was applied by switching the positive and negative leads. i.e.-applying the anode (the positive lead) to the piece you are attempting to remove the plating from. I have attempted this process with less than satisfactory results". Maybe he did somthing wrong, I cant be sure, but it seems that it doesn't work so good in practice. regards Eddie
