Fake "Capture of" Campaign Medals
Erik,
I can't guarantee that it is indeed genuine. Authenticating from scans in not an exact science. I have seen original campaign medals with this unusual pebbling. Alexei |

Thank You for the help. I'm glad that it could be original ( if it is a fake then it is really good). I will put it back in my campaign medal collection. :)

Erik,
Here's an idea - if you have access to a digital scan and caliper, could you weight (in grams, without the suspension and the link) and measure it (diameter and thickness in mm). Alexei |

The scale I have can't read tenths of grams but is quite exact.
The medal is about 32.3mm in diameter, 3mm thick. Ring is 5.8mm and 1.5mm in diameter. It weighs about 19g. I will link to some better pictures of the medal, since most of them are too big to attach. *** LINKS REMOVED BY MODERATOR *** /Erik Last edited by Nota Bene; 02-21-2007 at 07:55 PM. |

Erik,
Thanks for the measurements and the scans. It is indeed very heavily pebbled and it is also too heavy. I am , but I still can't call it an fake without reservations. Alexei |

Thank You for the help. Hopefully some day in the future we will know for sure. :)
By the way. I got this medal from E in Dec 2002. Thank You Erik |

Two Budapest medals
The medal on the left (never mind the strange grease that refuses to come off) is thinner and lighter and, as shown in the third scan, has a surface defect (a sign of casting?). The one on the right looks better to me apart from the ring and I am not sure if it is crisp enough for it's age. Measurements:
Left: weight (without link) 15.6g, diam. 32.44mm, thickness 2.14-2.2mm Right: weight (without link) 17.01g, diam. 32.16mm, thickness 2.76mm. Thanks in advance, Sergei |

Sergei,
I don't like the medal on the left. The one on the right is good I think.

Sergei,
I believe that the medal on the left is a cast fake with one of the worst rings I have ever seen. Now, about the one on the right, it doesn't seem to be very crisp at all, which, to me, is a worry. Can you please post better scans of the medal on the right. Marc |

Thanks. If not better then at least bigger scans of the medal on the right in the previous post.
