Award Card Summaries

Award card indicates ethnic Georgian Lieutenant Georgii Konstantinovich Zakaryadze, platoon leader in the 1375 Rifle Regiment, 414 Rifle Division, (55 Rifle Corps, Independent Coastal Army) was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War Class II Class 219.556 according to unit order 045/N dated 21.7.44 on temporary certificate 230860. He was born 1921, a Comsomol member, and lived in Samtredia, Georgian SSR.

He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star 339.551 on temporary certificate A246158 according to Order 024/N dated 18.10.43 for “combat against the German invaders."

I think Bill has a Red Star only a few away from this soldiers, to someone else from the 414th.

Short description of personal combat feat or accomplishment

He distinguished himself in combat during the penetration of the enemy defense near SV (South East?) Electric Station #10 on 9 May 1944. After an artillery preparation, Lieutenant Zakaryadze forcefully and decisively led his soldiers in the attack. Bursting into the enemy trenchline, Lieutenant Zakaryadze and his platoon occupied the first enemy trench line shortly after vicious fighting, destroying 19 German soldiers and capturing two light machineguns, five submachineguns, and 15 rifles.

He is deserving of the Order of the Red Star. Signed Commander, 1375 Rifle Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Gventsa on 25 June 1944

Recommended upgrade to Order of the Patriotic War II Class by Commander, 414 Rifle Division, General-Major (?) on 28 June 1944

Upgrade endorsed Commander, 55 Rifle Corps, Guards General-Lieutenant Lozyagi on 15 July 1944

Awarded the Order of the Patriotic War II Class by 55 Rifle Corps Order 04/N dated 21.7.44, signed Deputy Chief of Personnel Guards Captain Voron on 21.7.44

It must have lived in a garage or shed until recently because the dimples on the back of the screwplate have got dust and what looks like cobwebs in.

"SV" is Sevastopol. The 1375th really saw some action in Crimea (and the peninsula adjacent before landing).

Most of the citations from this time have particularly high kill counts. The Germans were up against the wall and out of materiel.
