Sorry Eric, I haven't checked this one in a while. The cool thing about this medal is the double meaning with the "D" which was the OGPU head "Iron" Felix's patronymic initial and the symbol for Dynamo which was organized/created in 1923 by the (O)GPU to promote physical fitness in their ranks together with other types of training-related sports. I don't think it was an accident that this OGPU anniversary medal has the pronounced Dzerzhinsky "D."

Very high quality medals, to be sure. As to your questions, the only reference material I have on desk medals is either in Avers or the last section of a book on MVD awards. And if they aren't in the book you posted above, then we will have to wait for answers.:(

Please post them. I've often been impressed by the craftsmanship of items from Armenia.

And as for the symbols present - well they run the range from the Aurora and the Winter Palace/Hermitage to Sputnik, so I'd say it is crammed with important images. Really good looking medal.:thumbsup

My small collection of these types of medals is a bit one-sided.:rolleyes: Here's one of the latest. It is for the 70th anniversary of the KGB in Lvov, but I really like it more because of the ingenious plastic case it came in. You take the medal out, flip the case over and insert the medal into the slot and you have a stand.

I'll post the 50th anniversary from the same location later (the pictures didn't come out right). These were rather large compared to most table medals (in my experience) - 8-9cm diameter and 1-2cm thick aluminum.

The last picture is of the medal in its case with the clear plastic cover on - which is why it looks unclear.

Here they come. I'm not sure who was the designer, probably it's his initials on the medals. But for sure you always can say they were made by MDs, cos of their quality and charm.

the right one is remembrance for earthquake 1988, the left one is for guys from Musa Ler 1915

those were going for something like $20 with a big medallion for Yerevan's(capital) 1750 birthday and I just couldn't resist it.

Found the first medal fom Armenia 07.12.1988 in my book.

It was made by LMD mint in 1990 out of tombak Artist is A. KH. Adamjan
(А. X. Адамяан) 10.400 pieces were minted

And the second medal 1915 was minted by LMD mint in 1991. Artist is also A. KH. Adamjan (А. X. Адамяан) 10.000 pieces were minted.

Here is my new one. Commemorative for the Brest's Castle heroes. The first resistance to nazi blitz-krig.

It's a shame that medal is aluminium, but I got just because I like the history of Brest.
It's 75mm in diameter and I like the artists work.

It says 'We will die, but won't live the castle' actual script written on the castle by one of the defenders. They kept this promise.
