Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Although these medals are well above my pay grade, and certainly not within the range and scope of my collective interest/experience, what concerns me, aside from the over-engineering aforementioned, is the discontinuity of the obverse circumference ring below the suspension ring. I have circled my area of concern in red utilizing your photograph. A previous assessment noted this same flaw/fault on the reverse. I have seen similar design flaws/faults on a very convincing (close, but no cigar) Black Metallurgy medal reproduction.

Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

thank you for your replies everyone. it measures 32 mm in diameter and is 3 mm thick. weight of roundel alone (without five pointed suspension and without small separate suspension ring) is about 17 grams.

as a side, mondvor does not have a picture of the reverse side of this type of medal. also, the medal in question has no gilding on it whatsoever, perhaps that's what makes the details stand out so much. i do see the area that you've pointed out where the base medal transitions to the suspension ring at 12 o'clock and it does look off. that was the only concern that i had about it.

here is another Odessa Voenkomat that i have for comparison. this one has all of its gilding, has an uncut ring, and has been accepted as an original.

And what's the point? This latter one is a gold-washed commissariat, but all the criticisms of the earlier one still stand - suspension ring, over detailing, sickle handle, and to boot - no gold wash.

Re: Fake "Defense of" Campaign Medals

Hi guys,

How about this Leningrad? I've owned it for a few years but have been suspicious about it.

Thanks!

George
