Can someone post the pictures or provide an online reference for rank boards prior to 1943?
If not, at least some descriptive information on how to recognize would be really appreciated. I have many photos at home and try to identify the ranks, but I have no idea how it works. Some soldiers (generals I assume!?) have a kind of diamond-shaped patch on both sides of their collar end and then, they can have 1, 2, 3 or 4 small diamond-shaped pins attached on it to indicate with specific level I guess.... 1 small diamonds = General Major 2 small diamonds = General Lieutenant 3 ... I have other pics with soldiers having a rectangular patch on each side of their collar and then, they can have either 0,1,2 or 3 small square (or sometime, they seem rectangular instead of square) small pins attached to it. I assume those soldiers are either senior or junior officers and the smaller pins on their rectangular patches indicates the specific ranks? Now, I found other soldiers with triangular-shaped small pin on a rectangular collar patch... this was in MacDaniel book and if I remember correctly, this was for sergeants. I am starting to get the picture, but if anyone can provide accurate and easy to understand info about this, that would be great. Last edited by CtahhR; 09-21-2012 at 04:25 PM. |

Thanks Alfred.
I also received some scans from a fellow member, but unfortunately, the images have a very big size and couldn't be posted on the forum. With your post and the scans received, I just realized that early soviet ranks were very different than later one and there was less a formal hierarchy with usual naming used later and in other countries armies. |
