Lauri,

I am wondering if you had any facts to back up this statement?

Yes i know that it was me who said, that gold plated medals of the armed forces veteran doesn't exist... Now this medal came to me.. not from any dealer, not from any shop...i found it accidentaly in local flea market, where it was together with some jubileum medals. So i don't know what to think! If it is fake, then why is it the only one? When they are faking them, u can see that fakes are coming also to shops and collectors meetings. But i never heard or even saw this medal with my own eyes. So in conclusion.. just luck or someone's one piece experiment?
Medal has LMD on the ring and nice and good job gold plating, connecting ring is also gold ( not real gold i think, i didn't tested yet ) plated, like i saw on some pictures in this thread before. This medals you must likely decided are real... some pics.

Regards,

Lauri

Lauri,

I know that many collectors and some Forum members consider this medal a fake. Eugene and Desantnik are certainly making a very good point that this medal had become available only in the 90s.

I have seen this gold-plated variation with some wear and a light patina, that looked authentic to me. Upon closer examination it looked like a mint production without any problems, usually associated with other cast or coined fakes. Mint mark on the loop was very clear, and I do not believe somebody else besides the mint could do such a good job stamping it. I have also seen another variation without the MM. In both cases gold plating was applied before the enamel on the star.

Muzalevsky/Shishkov and Avers-6 consider it a legit variation.

Lauri,

I think that Alexei pointed out the one characteristic that allows to make a difference between original and fake: gold plating applied BEFORE enameling.

Alexei,

How can you tell if the gold plating was applied before the enamelling was done? Is it visible on these scans?

Thanks

hi,

hard to say if gold plating is under enamel, but if to compare with normal medal then normal medal is much darker under the star, gold plated medal is lighter.

I have one, and the enamel is lighter on the gold one. Due to the gold plating under the enamel.

Matthijs,

The gold plating under the enamel will give it a different glow. You need to compare a non plated medal with a genuine plated one under the same lighting conditions to see the difference readily and without possibility of error.

I bought two pieces on German eBay a few days ago, they are identical. I put them in a cleaning solution (quite acid) to check if a gold colour was simply applied on them or something like this.
The enamel looks original (hot enamel), but I can't see a major difference between the enamel on the a V.1 and on this one... am I wrong?
I decided to put these two medals with a V.1 under a black-light, and I saw something interesting (or perhaps not so... ) : the obverse of both variations appears the same, but the reverse of a V.1 is clearer than a V.2, which is really dark under the light...
Any comment?

Laurent,

The enamel seems to have the same shade and glow, which to me would indicate that the gilding was applied after enameling, therefore pointing to a fake. I am al so not too keen on the shade of the gold plating, I find it too bright and shiny.
