weird patina?
Fellas, does this strange patina set off any alarms? Can you explain the marked color variations somehow?

Re: weird patina?
Looks good to me. The screwplate has caused two different environments to occur, so the patina has developed different under it and out from under it.

Re: weird patina?
Well yeah....I am familiar with the screwplate effect but this looks different somehow.
It looks bigger than usual and it also looks more oval than round. And also the seller states it comes without the screwplate. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Re: weird patina?
The person awarded this badge may have added an additional piece to the backing. If the front is also lighter (same as the bit out from under the screwplate on the reverse), I would say that this railway worker has been exposed to rather acidic situations whilst wearing it. A railway worker would have great opportunities to be exposed to all sorts of chemicals, the area protected by the plate not so much.

Back to our originally scheduled programming....
The front.
Looks maybe a bit "shiny" like the outer part of the reverse, I guess. Doesn't look fake at all, at least IMO. Just curious about the funny patina.

Re: weird patina?
Or what about this example?
I've always felt that splotchy patina, especially when so contrasting like this, could be a sign of artificial patinazation. I'd love to see some examples of fake patina, and examples of good patina that is 'splotchy' like here. None of my my collection is near this level.

Re: weird patina?
Eric,
Your BM looks fully kosher to me. Now, when it comes to the attractiveness of the piece... Marc |

Re: weird patina?
I agree Marc, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This may be an example of a medal that would benefit from a clean to then let it age gracefully.

Re: weird patina?
You said it, brother. It makes me want to give the little feller a nice bubble bath. :D
