it is usefull simply to repair shoulder boards, or faking a recent uniform! It could seem idiot but I don't know the différence between this one showed by alexei and the real ones; I never dismantled my uniforms to see under the stars...

Guys,

They are still manufacturing those Soviet uniforms, and I guess they are running out of stars. I will post scans of some genuine ones.

Here are two genuine stars. As you can see they are better stamped and are mode detailed.

... the reverse is "mirror" image of the front, the wires are thicker and better attached.
