...were central asian rebels that the reds called bandits in an effort to undermine their political credibility. They were mainly fought by the red army in the civil war from 1919-1922, and then on a much smaller scale from 1922-1924.

This flag was awarded to a unit for fighting the Basmachi in central asia, probably around 1921. If I canfind out the language ( arabic script, but could be one of many central asian languages, or perhaps Azerbajani) I could be more specific in finding where it was awarded.

Note the green islamic color and the mix of islamic / arabic symbols and the communist symbols. This amazing mix of opposites lasted only a few years.
