Visiting Kiev
I am going to spend a few days in Kiev, does anyone know interesting markets, maybe militaria shops, bazaars, anything worth visiting on a 'medal hunt'? I have been to the main tourist attractions but that was a long time ago.
Thanks, Sergei |

Ask around, but two years ago there was a gathering of antique, militaria, and medal dealers at the Expo Center in west/northwestern Kiev. Really neat to see, but remember you can get in trouble if you try to export anything made before 1945. |

Thanks, I did not know about the pre-1945 cut-off date. Wow.

Ukraine
Yes, Desantik is right, Ukraine is full of fakes. There are quite a few markets in sumemr, but i was amazed at the total lack of anything genuine that was pre 1945.
Customs in Ukraine is very arbitrary, much like Russia in the mid 1990's. You may get by with a major item, or stopped for 2 hours over a repro medal you bought in a market. While i loved Ukraine, i did not enjoy Ukrainian Customs at Borisipol or Simefropol. DougD |

Law about Awards in USSR?
This is from Russian website today:
// Associated Press ############################################ If it's illegal,-how items from our Collections had got here?

Here is a translation from the Internet Translator
Student from the USA to Russia for an attempt at the removal of Soviet orders was delayed in Russia for an attempt of the removal from the country of Soviet orders and coins. The 29yaers old Chilean student, which studies physics at the university of Saint- Louis (state of Missouri), is accused of the illegal acquisition and attempt of the removal of the state rewards from the USSR. To her it threatens of up to seven years of prison as they described the friends of student, girl purchased six orders and several coins €49 each on the street ov Voronezh, and she did not suspect about that which exporting them from Russia accomplishes something unlawful. The representative of the state of Missouri into the congress has already been handled letter to the ambassador of Russia Yuri Ushakov apropos of this matter, after certifying Russian side, that occurred the error, and that offense was perfected unintentionally. As the answer Russian embassy certified congressman, that the student is already freed, however, according to the representatives of university, who also attempt soak Kontreras, it is still located through by confinement to quarters on the detachable apartment in the expectation of judicial session in its matter. I did not check the translation, I hope it make sence,if in some place it does not... guess Eric |
