My theory is different contractors. There is the notable "heavy" variant that some believe were either awarded to VIPs like generals or were just the earliest version and thus made the nicest.

We forget that they had to produce millions of these badges in a short time period. At least with Red Stars, for example, they awarded two million over something like 20 years (+).

Yeap. Last time I checked I had about 30 different variations in my collection, including three heavy ones.

Re: 25th Anniversary of Victory in WWII

Notice the reverse; not your usual blank but a semi-mirror reverse to it. I thought there was a thread discussing these but I couldn't find it. Maybe we can see some variations here, in thread under a correctly identified heading.

Notice also that the suspension loop looks to have been broken off and a hole drilled through the badge itself. This badge has a lot of wear and looks to have been proudly worn for a lot of years.

I've also highlighted the makers mark in case anybody might be able to identify it.

Re: 25th Anniversary of Victory in WWII

Definitely a home repair job. All I can make out from the photo of the mark is a "Sh" but the next letter(s) escape me. Whoever it is took the MMD and LMD queue and encircled the main letters so perhaps a D for "Dvor" is either present or implied.

Re: 25th Anniversary of Victory in WWII

I have three variations in my collection. From left to right: the elusive brass variation (note patina), the most common "dish backed" aluminum variation, and a "nearly full reverse" aluminum variation.

Re: 25th Anniversary of Victory in WWII

The makers' marks are different for each of the three. Again, left to right: the brass variation, aluminum "dish back", and aluminum full reverse.

And, finally, to the one document (came with the "dish back")...

Now that's what I was talking aboot, thanks, Greg!
I notice that my reverse is an even less than "nearly full" version compared to yours, and the 'pin holder' on your brass version seems to be a seperatly applied piece like many 60s era badges have.

Re: 25th Anniversary of Victory in WWII

Thanks, Eric. Weird thing is I never intended to have more than one of these... they just sorta crept up on me- the one intentional acquisition was the brass which I got from Alexei. I believe Alexei had said, in a post awhile back, that he had counted 20+ variations of these badges.

Re: 25th Anniversary of Victory in WWII

Greg, I - like many others, I'm sure - have this document. Though I can't make out what rank this person had because of one letter I am too tired to keep trying to figure out.

The thing about these that I think is interesting is that small medal had an equally diminutive document (about 10.1cm x 7.1cm). I can easily see this document going missing.:)
