Cannot tell you year of production, but it looks like a hungarian one to me.

Yes, this is a postwar Hungarian helmet.

Ok, I have acquired another helmet. I hope this one actually is wartime Soviet, as it was not cheap. While a picture is worth a thousand words, I cant seem to get my pics small enough to be posted on the forum today. So, here is a description of the helmet...

Kelly green in color, paint has good wear. The remnants of a red star w/hammer and sickle are present on the front. The chinstrap is of woven material, with a black felty lining. The buckle is heavy metal.

There are 3 small rivits, high on the crown, and look more like screws that were screwed from the inside out, and the excess was sheared off.

Inside is a cloth, sock-like liner, with a leatheresque sweat band. Under the liner are 3 or 4 small cloth, stuffing-filled, sausage-looking things.

Finally, onthe rear inside of the helmet is a stamp, which i have recreated below.

Any preliminary opinions from the experts?

Ok, I have finally put together some pics.

My guess is that it is a model 1939 helmet with the original liner and original paint. About 15-20% of the paint has worn off, but it still has a little of the red star on the front, which is cool.

It looks like to be a nice Ssh-39 helmet. What is the black thing under the chinstrap on the first picture?

The black thing is just the underside of the other part of the chinstrap. that half of the chistrap seems to be missing the cotton part that was sewn onto the leather strap.

Thanks Dolf! I had been looking for a model 1940 helmet, but this 1939 one fell into my lap.

I don't know if the 1939 model is rarer, more desirable, or more expensive than the 1940 model, but I think it is interesting to have this earlier type. If anyone knows about the relative rarety or pricing differences, I'd be interested to know.
