Why there was a change in Lenin's face on the variations of the order of Lenin?

Someone emailed me these questions. I thought I'd post them here then email back any replies.

1. Did the Order of Lenin carry any monetary award? (weren't very early recipients offered some sort of benefit like public transportation?)

2. Has the Order of Lenin been awarded to scientists? (sounds easy enough..anyone know of a particular scientist?)

3. What was the highest award for Soviet scientist? If it is different from the Order of Lenin, does it carry money award? (I was thinking the Lenin prize, but would they offer an outright money award? doesn't sound very proleterian to me )

The Distinguished Professor of Physics Highest Soviet awards, include the Lenin Prize (1984) for his work in plasma physics and "Hero of Socialist Labor" for his leadership of the International Mission to Halley's Comet (1986).

Mikhail Klavdiyevich Tikhonravov. ( Two Orders of Lenin)

Designer at Nll-4 and Korolev design bureau. Leader in development of Sputnik and Vostok spacecraft. Also performed early ICBM work and was pioneering rocketeer at GIRD and Nll-3.

Corresponding member of the international academy of astronautics (1968). Lenin Prize in 1957 for his work on the first Sputniks. Two Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, Order of the Patriotic War. Doctor of technical sciences (1958), Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation (1970), Hero of Socialist Labour (1961).

Yakov Borisovich Zel'dovich. ( Two Orders of Lenin)

he worked at the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad (later in Moscow), where he essentially educated himself. In his later years he was also a professor at Moscow State University and head of the division of relativistic astrophysics at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute. He made significant discoveries and wrote important books on problems of combustion and detonation. He worked on shock waves and gas dynamics and played a significant role in the development of Soviet nuclear and thermonuclear weapons. In the 1950s

There are probably 100's (if not 1000's) of orders of Lenin, awarded to scientists in various levels. It will be an interesting subject for a book, and probably the acedemy of science of RF have the records on Soviet scientists awardd the HSL, and "Plain" order of Lenin.

Yes there must be loads of Soviet scientists that have been awarded the HSL, and a single Order of Lenin.
BTW that,s a lovely group from Igor Kurchatov!

As regards to the other questions:

1. Did the Order of Lenin carry any monetary award? (weren't very early recipients offered some sort of benefit like public transportation?)

Heroes of the Soviet Union were offered benifits like free public transportation etc and still are today, they also get, for example free entry to Museums. And I seem to remember that there was a monetary award with the Titel. And in the case that the title was awarded postum the Widow recived the money.
But I don,t think any monetary award was made for a single Awarding of the Order of Lenin.

Lenin Prize, Meritorious Inventor, Technologist are a few of the Awards to Soviet Scientists.
International prizes and Awards for Scientists generally have a monetary award to the Awardee ( Nobel Prize, Bruce Prize & Medal etc )
So if a Soviet Scientist was Honoured in this way he also recived the money.

I have come accross a Order of Lenin type 6 with hand engraved serial number. Have anyone seen this variation before?

The Type 6 Order of Lenin from the Leningrad Mint seems to have several variations in the style and placement of the serial number. I have a few on the website. I'm continually debating as to whether I should have created new variation names ( I initially did it to organize the section better ). I feel the Type 6 Leningrad's exhibit more of a "engrave them wherever and with whatever" type attitude than a markedly different approach in their manufacture. If you like to send me 300 DPI scans of your award, I'll put it online and you will receive proper credit.
