The 44 Non-Soviet Heroes Of The Soviet Union.
Here is a Photo of a young Fidel Castro wearing his HSU and Lenin Orders.

I was wondering if Fidel Castro is listed in the HSU reference.
I'd love to know what he did to deserve the HSU. Rusty.

I,m not sure about the HSU Reference, maybe somone who has the book can check it out. What did he do to deserve it? Hmm....... Estabans "Colony" Theory could be part of the reason and then of course in 1975-1989 he sent Military advisers and Cuban Troops to Africa (Angola & Ethiopia). Before that the Missile Crisis plus the Sugar trade with the USSR. Estaban, I was wondering the same thing about the Guards Badge, you just can,t see enough though can you. Chances are that it is, or at least a very similar Cuban Badge Modelled on the Soviet version. Eddie.

I looked but found no entry for Castro in the Hero books. Just to confirm a suspicion, does anyone know of other non-russian recipients of the Hero star, such as heads of state? I'd like to see if they are in the Hero books.

Would be interesting to see how many non-russians got this Award. Eddie.

So this would mean that the blank numbers were most likely issued but not available to researcheres.
Interesting. Rusty.

Afgan Cosmonaut HSU
Abdul Ahad Mohmand, the first Afghan in space HSU.
The Soyuz - with Lyakhov and Abdul Ahad Mohmand, the first Afghan in space, on board - left the Mir space station Tuesday for what normally is a three-hour flight back to Earth and a parachute landing in the Soviet province of Kazakhstan. Abdul Ahad Mohmand will receive the Order of Lenin and a gold star, while Lyakhov will be given the Order of the October Revolution. This HSU now lives as an Afgan refugee in Stuttgart, Germany. Eddie.

According to Shishkov/Muzalevsky, Castro got his HSU star on 23/5/1963.
There are 40 HSU awardees from foreign countries in that book, and Castro was the 15th in that list. Tal

Keep in mind the Hero books were printed in 1988, but I checked just for the heck of it and couldn't find Mohmand either.
Using the date Tal supplied for Castro, I found him in the Ordenskaya Knishka "Hero of the Soviet Union" book. He was given HSU star #11124. Date listed in the OK book was same as Shishkov/Muzalevsky. Art Quote:
