Whilst marching in a marching column, the regiment was approaching the village of Davyduv 26th July 1944, the advance was halted by enemy machine gun/mortar fire. Platoon Commander Senior Lieutenant Gonchar, ignoring danger, immediately deployed the 76mm guns and opened rapid fire in the direction from where he heard gunfire.
Soon silencing the Hitlerites, leaving up to 20 dead, two destroyed auto-mobiles, one transporter in disorderly retreat.
And in subsequent battles, thanks to the personal bravery, valour and courage Senior Lieutenant Gonchar, used devastating fire of his gun in no time on fleeing Hitlerites, providing assistance to the advancement of our infantry forward.

These actions were part of the Lvov–Sandomierz Offensive. Davydov was along the strategic highway between L'vov and Zolychev. The enemy that was encountered will have been German forces escaping from the Brody Cauldron which had been encircled and destroyed on the 22nd July.
