Kurchatov, Igor Vasil'evich, Nuclear Physicist
The father of the Soviet atomic weapon. Unfortunally, the group is in Kurchatov institute...BTW, he got Lenin prize No. 1:

Gentlemen:
What´s that little red flag at the top left of the picture? I have seen lots of soviet people(and Brezhnev, OF COURSE)using this flag badge. Can you give me a detailed pic?

It's the badge of a member of the Supreme Soviet.

thanks Tal !:p I discovered by your pic and the legend what was this discrete medal on the right: the very scarce (I think) joliot-curie medal. The photos are very soviet-style (the chairman with his supreme soviet of RSFSR...)

I don't know much about it; if I don't fool, it concerns tasks for strenghtening international peace and cooperations between states, like lenin international prize. It's not a scientific medal, ut politic. Let me take a glance in my doc
sorry it's not in my doc and don't remember where I saw it. Frederic Joliot-Curie was one of the scientists who worked on neutrons and nuclear fission. He's after 1945 one of the fathers of french atomic program. He's active member of french communist party and president of the wolrd comitee for peace (of soviet obedience). Hence the links with the medal. Any more gentlemen? for comparison: the awards of a colleague, piotr kapitsa (soviet): Medal of the Liége University, 1934; Faraday Medal of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1942; Franklin Medal of the Franklin Institute, 1944; Sir Devaprasad Sarbadhikary Gold Medal of the Calcutta University, 1955; Kothenius Gold Medal of the German Academy of Naturalists "Leopoldina", 1959; Frédéric Joliot-Curie Silver Medal of the World Peace Committee, 1959; Lomonosov Gold Medal of the USSR Academy of Sciences, 1959; Great Gold Medal of the USSR Exhibition of Economic Achievements, 1962; Medal for Merits in Science and to Mankind of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, 1964; International Niels Bohr Medal of Dansk Ingeniørvorening, 1964; Rutherford Medal of the Institute of Physics and Physical Society, England, 1966; Golden Kamerlingh Onnes Medal of the Netherlands Society of Refrigeration, 1968; Copernic Memorial Medal of the Polish Academy of Sciences, 1974. USSR State Prize - 1941, 1943; Simon Memorial Award of the Institute of Physics and Physical Society, England, 1973; Rutherford Memorial Lecture, Royal Society of London; Bernal Memorial Lecture, Royal Society of London, 1976. Order of Lenin- 1943, 1944, 1945, 1964, 1971, 1974; Hero of Socialist Labour, 1945, 1974; Order of the Red Banner of Labour, 1954; Order of the Jugoslav Banner with Ribbon, 1967. nice, isn't it? I thonk it's not really a soviet distinction, but was decerned by the world comitee for peace, which was more or less under soviet control. The Joliot-Curie was given to scientists, politics (ANC of south-africa), and Valia terechkova is quoted. |
