Medal "For United Nations Mission 1943".

Based on the suspension bar, the name would be Medal "For a United Nations Delegate 1943 [1951 C.E.]".

A reissue of the obsolete imperial medal for service in Korea. Interesting that the socialist government chose to recognize this service.

I have always found this Medal a most conflicted award.
Not only does it use the Ethiopian calender (which is strange to an outsider) but it also commemorates service that was seen by the Soviet world as an "attack" on communism.
As each communist nation's idea of the "communist ideal" was different and Ethiopia's isolation (geographically and culturally) from many of the "east/west" issues gives it a unique stance. Not to forget that Ethiopia was "liberated from fascists" by the Anglo-Ethiopian Agreements.

This also brings images of the Emperor pleading to the League Of Nations to my mind, another uniquely Ethiopian event.

Information is slow to present itself but it keeps coming.
This is the Medal "For United Nations Mission 1943" (ሽልማት "ለተባበሩት መንግሥታት ተልዕኮ ፲፱፻፵፫"). It is a current award for participation in United Nations Peacekeeping Missions. Although Ethiopia itself required a Peacekeeping presence (United Nations Mission In Ethiopia And Eritrea 2000-2008) Ethiopian troops participate in United Nations Missions throughout non-Ethiopian Africa. The date "1943" is the Ethiopian calender year that roughly translates to September 1950 to August 1951 when Ethiopia participated in its first mission.

Ethiopia's first United Nations Mission participation was in sending the Kagnew Battalion to Korea in June 1951. During the mission 3,518 Ethiopians participated with 121 KIA and 536 WIA.

The fact that this is a current Medal awarded for active missions explains why it is considerably more common than a "replacement" to the remnants of 3,500 Korea veterans.

Here is a rather new example in the original case and still retaining its attachment fork. The recess in the case for the bar makes the Medal rather cramped.
